Thinking about buying a 2-3 month subscription as a gift for my little brother. My question is, does anyone use a service like this (or has used)? Would you recommend it?

If it's anything like Netflix count on getting more than a few scratched/damaged disks.

also dont count on getting any of the newer games (ie popular games in the last 6months) for a while. They are horribly understocked IMO and cant provide a good service because of it.

A coworker of mine has it. Gamefly I think.

He said it would be worth it if you only played the game for less than a week and turned it around for a new one. But he can only play an hour or so a day, and had the new Ratchet and Clank game. He wanted to beat it, but it would end up costing him more than if he just went out and bought the game.

He said he is going to have to use it as a test drive service, rather than to actually play the games. Otherwise it costs too much.

I used them for a few years in the past, then I quit for a year, and started my account again just recently. Their turnaround times on games has vastly improved in that year, from a week and a half to two weeks per down to 4 days on average. It's by no means anywhere near netflix's service, but it suffices.

I haven't had a problem with disc quality yet. I've never had to send a game back to them because it was so scratched it was unplayable.

Like it was said, if you expect to get new releases, good luck with that. I've had them skip over the first 6 items in my gamefly list, when the last four were marked "High" meaning 75-95% chance they will send that game, or whatever their arbitrary measurement system means. They're always understocked, and their measurement system for availability should be updated somehow.

If you're like me, and really just want the luxury of always having a "new" game at your house, I'd go with the two game plan. I keep my game queue filled with past and present titles I want to play, and I always have at least one game at my house at all times, often times, two. I get bored with games quickly, so gamefly really helps me cut down on my spending on games.

They have other incentives too, discounts on buying used games, and the ability to trade in games toward your monthly subscription.

Overall, I highly reccomend GameFly. However, if you like to find every secret, and gather every achievement, you may not find your money well spent there. Basically, with the two game plan being 23$ a month, if you go through at least one game per month, the subscription has been worth it.

Yea, doing the math makes it sound ok if you're at least beating a game per month. I don't know if my brother would or not, though. Especially since he mostly enjoys FPS type games, which are heavy on the multiplayer and not so much on the single player. He does trade games back often, but I don't know how old the games are and how much he played them before... Hmm. Sounds like I need to do more thinking about this (and maybe a little more research into him). Thanks for all the comments so far.

I know people like to give peeps gifts, and they all be like "ya bro, you rule!" and what not.
But why not just ask him if he thinks he would get a use out of it?

If he plays FPS, and plays them online. . . it might be best to just buy him the newest one out (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2? I watched someone play it..they were all into it lol) so he has hours of enjoyment for as long as he wants.

I've never had a problem with scratched disks, it's cheap, & I've found you can "cheat" the wait for newer games a bit by simply having only ONE game (the one you want) next in your queue.

So, I'd recommend it.

I've thought about trying that. How long have you had to wait on average to get that game? It seems like if the top few games are low availability, they'll hold off a day before sending out a new game.

Cause he already has them.

edit: I did think about buying him Borderlands though. He enjoyed Fallout 3 and so I think he'd enjoy it too. But I'd probably rather get it for the PC than the 360 for him.

Problem I had with Gamefly is you couldn't hardly get a new game. If its a new game just plan on waiting at least a month to get it. I wasn't a fan of the service and canceled after a few months. Also the scratched disks was a bit of a problem. They would send you another but I feel like that is punishing the customer as we pay for a monthly service and to send and receive broken disks takes time we are paying for.

A couple days. I'm a 2 game subscriber though, so I always have a game to play while waiting for a new one.

And don't blame Game Fly for scratched disks, they aren't scratching them.

Us users are.

True, but it would kill them to check the discs and run them through and automatic scratch repairer before sending them out again? It may not get them all, but at least it would be readable.

I don't get it, I had a subscription for a couple years before I quit and started up again, and I never got a copy of a game so mangled that it wouldn't play. Y'all must be super unlucky.

In other news, proof again that you will never see a new release with GameFly. They sent me my next game yesterday, No More Heroes is on its way to my house, but, GameFly skipped over Mario Bros. Wii (low), Assassins Creed 2 (low), Uncharted 2 (medium), Nostalgia (high), Half Minute Hero (Avaliable Now as of yesterday), and Mini Ninjas (high).

It seems as though they will go down your list and look for games that are currently at your primary distribution center. Mine is in Pittsburgh, and as it seems, they keep all the new releases in California. If it's true, and their selection algorithms will use your primary distribution center as a heavier weight than placement on your GameQ, then that algorithm needs a rewrite.

yeah i think a previous poster nailed it by just keeping the one game you want on your queue, rather than filling it up. I never did that, but i learned a while ago that i had to be damn sure i wanted to play every game on my queue because if there was one i didnt, i would get that.

You keep 1 game on your queue you just won't get anything I went down that road also.
