Is anyone going to pick up PSzero? From what I've seen it looks to be descended from PSO which I played more than all but a handful of games to date. I'm curious if anyone has bought it yet (comes out today I think) and what you think of it.

I'm starting to have a hard time relating to the regular review sites which probably means gaming has passed me by, but a return of PSO has me interested!

None of the phantasy star online games have held my interest very long.
I usually end up hating the controls.

I played it on Xbox Live, PS2, and PSP. Never made it very far before stopping.

PSO was only ever on the Dreamcast in my mind.

EDIT - I didn't think there ever was a Phantasy Star online for anything other than Dreamcast and GameCube (I see Wiki lists Xbox too). It was always the online element that attracted me to PSO beyond the RPG story line. I do remember a Phantasy Star Universe (I think that was on PS2) but I always heard it was a complete departure from PSO.

I only downloaded the demo on the Xbox 360. It let you play forever, but reset your characters every couple weeks, or something like that.

I played the game on the PS2 a bit, my cousin had it. She liked it, and I tried it out, it was Ok, but not that interesting. Like an MMO-Lite.

I played it on the PSP, and made it pretty far, but it was pretty boring.

Will the DS version include nintendo WiFi play, or will it be local multiplayer only, like the PSP version?

From what I've gathered it will support local and WiFi play up to 4 players. I've seen that the online play is region free too so that you can play with people in EU and Japan.

Like I said before I played the DreamCast PSO until I wore grooves in the media. There is no going back in nostalgia but that probably won't stop me from at least trying it out.

The xbox port sucked so much ***, you need an active xbox live account to even play it by yourself.

I've always held the PS games in high regards, so much like Final Fantasy games, I'll probably give it a chance. And, much like FF, it'll probably make me cry from how bad it is.

I am a massive fan of Phantasy star online. And was disheartened after they started spewing title after title out instead of fixing what was wrong in the game they already have out.(FFXI Vs XIV comes springing to mind.) They got into a rut that the second the game went into decline instead of changing their style to attract more players and keeping them.(The distance between updates kept people only subscribing the month of the update and leaving after 1 month.)

There is:
PSO ep1 DC
PSO ep1 PC
PSO ep 1 2 and 3 GC(3 was a stand alone card game)
PSO ep 1 2 Xbox
PSO Blue burst: ep 1 2 and 4(The japanese servers are still up for this I believe.)
PSU with 1 expansion for ps2 360 and PC.
PSU for the psp(Number 2 is coming out soon)
PS zero for the ds now.

Once you get over how much it is different from pso. PSU was satisfying enough for me to take 3 characters to 100 on the first game. Later buying the expansion playing through it's offline mode and going online for a short while. PSU isn't a massive departure from pso. But it's enough for it to not feel like the same ol' pso.

A lot of good ideas came into play for psu it just wasn't well executed. And a lot of the good ideas from pso where trashed.(The ID system being the biggest for online play. Encouraging trade sega? One of the best ideas you had. Offline the ID system was stupid but online it should of been kept.)

Balancing was freaking HORRIBLE is PSU. The worse I've seen in any game MMO or not. The DDs Verse ranged attackers Verse mages weren't balanced. Weapon classes weren't balanced. Races on the most basic levels were not balanced. (2 races have photon blasts while the other 2 don't. The **** sega?

I could rant for hours about PSO and PSU but I won't. As far as Phantasy star zero concerned I won't be buying it any time soon. I've grown tired of getting comfortable with a PS whatever only to have it tossed for a chance to re-release another version of it thousand will buy for it to suck and you have to do it again 1-2 years later.

If you want to release games like this make them offline so the OLD OLD SCHOOL Phantasy star fans can finally stop ******** about how PSO ruined the series.

Pretty sure thats how it worked, I remember seeing an offline patch for it on a torrent site.

EDIT: Ah heres a quote from gamespots review "In another strange twist, the game requires you to have a valid Xbox Live account to play the game at all, online or off. "

PSO will always be top dog as far as favorite old school game. I played it online on DC and xbox. Had a nice static of four dudes, and then thing about it was, you had to know how to move and dodge stuff, sure there were heal spells and health packs, but the mages blew **** up more so than healed. There was no zerging, just dodging big moves and going nuts when the boss was weak or charging another attack. It like a single player games boss battles, only for four people. And the weapons were the biggest thing, I'll never forget the J-sword, or the toy hammer, or the guitar, or the frostqueen, or the Faust, OR the needler. They were all very different weapons, even if the queen/faust and the j sword were best, it always felt cool to, as long as you could avoid enemy attacks, use whatever weapon you felt like using. Also the Falz battles (esp the one in the elevator) were all awesome. PSU had promise, and then ****** it right in the *** with how they tried to curb gold selling out of the gate. It was one thing it make it so the only way to get weapons was to craft them yourself (In fact, I liked the fact that you "fed" your little house robot and it grew as it made stuff an eventually would fight battle with you. It pales to mags for me because of how awesome chaining the photon things were. but the fact that the rarer ingredients THE HIGHER CHANCE OF FAILURE. That was unacceptable, to farm for hours, put them all in your little ***** bot and then it tells you it had a 70% chance to fail.

I still play Gamecube's PSO, private servers are available for online play and it's free. X-Box version however is out of luck.

You're calling something on Xbox, "old school"? Wow, kid, just wow. Old school would be the best Phantasy Star game in existance: PSIII for the Sega Genesis.

NOTHING, on XBOX, is "old school". And PSO, is terrible.

I grabbed Phantasy Star Zero and started to play... the targeting system is just as horrible as it was on the 360 and the PSP. This feature alone makes it a headache to play and regardless of how good the game is it will always be looming over it.

the target system does blow.

I picked the game up to play with my cousin, who really enjoys it...
I like the online play, but I've done little of the story mode.

It is fun to run around and blast **** up when I can't get on WoW or on my ps3.

The Japanese players are uber polite too. Gets kind of on the nerves lol.

Playing it on the DS got me interested in the PSU for the 360 again, and I fired up the Demo on Xbox Live. While the targeting system is the same on the 360, it's easier to do using a controller and watching it on the TV than it is on the DS.

The only thing about the game on the 360 is the town is filled with people spamming about showing nude pictures of themselves for 2kM.
