Thanks again for the info about the behavior settings. That pretty much solved all the problems I was having with the AI and now I'm breezing along quite nicely.

I've decided to start with a nice, if somewhat dull, lawful-good type character and not **** off Alastair and Leiliana. Next run though I'll be a little more...ethically colorful...and see if I can't get myself on the good side of the more amoral NPCs.

I did decide to find a mod to change Alastair's appearance. Seriously, I just couldn't take him seriously with the front of his hair sticking up, much less try to romance him. I kept having dialogue from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer running through my head, when the BuffyBot declares, "Angel's lame. His hair goes straight up, and he's bloody stupid."

This is my Alastair. Won't make him any smarter, but at least I won't feel like I'm wooing a Backstreet Boy.

Nah, I have a toddler running around. Not that I ever play while he's awake anyway, due to the blood splatter, and sheer lack of opportunity. But still...I don't need ****, much less in game form.

Shaow, just checking, does this mean if I go to Microsoft's website and download the Service Pack 2, it should fix the .dll problem I'm having? (the .dll is part of DirectX 9.0c, I believe, which I cannot download due to compatibility issues)

I believe so, yes.

You'll need this too after installing SP2.

If this works, I'm officially naming my first character in DA:O "Shaow."

Everyone will probably think I meant Shadow, but that's a common issue, right? :D

Gratz! This will be the day you will remember forever as the day you made the mistake of naming your character Shaow!

Mages seem to be fairly overpowered in this game.

Mages dish out a lot of punishment.

But NPC mages go down like wet paper bag if you can land a stun on and then sic some form of melee on em. My arcane warrior drops tower magi in 2-3 hit with kinda bad weapon on hard.

Actually, I found another Alastair mod that didn't have me thinking, "O hai, Aragorn!" every time I saw it.

LOL don't ask.

It's at the site I linked for the Alastair mods. I read the description out of morbid curiosity and found myself amused to see there were three variants; mild, medium and zesty. One would think we were discussing salsa, as opposed to horizontal mambo.

I will admit, I did get the "Natural Bodies" mod. Not because I have any need to see the characters nude, but more because I feel compelled to extend the ol' middle digit to the puritanical values that make our society so damn afraid of the sight of a little honest (or virtual) skin that we have to paint fig leaves bras and underwear on characters even in coitus.

Ah. Found them. This game will be even more fun now Smiley: wink Also I like that fact that it will make the sex scene play every time, rather than just the first.

More tech help, anyone?

I'm running into what is apparently a known issue with the game freezing during cut scenes, namely a rather crucial one involving assassins sent for Leliana. I can't get past this scene, so I'm rather stuck.

One of the "fixes" recommended is to update ones drivers. I did check and my video drivers were a smidge out of date, so I corrected that issue, but I'm wondering about my DirectX. The site doesn't say which version of DirectX is recommended, at least not at first glance.

The DA:O website just says the game is compatible with XP and Vista. I'm using XP because I heard so much bad stuff about Vista I couldn't bring myself to upgrade to it. I've heard good things about Windows7, but I'm always leery of upgrading to new versions of Windows until they've been around for a while and have gotten some of the kinks worked out, so I haven't done it yet.

So, my questions are:

1) Is there an updated version of DirectX I should be using with WinXP? (I currently have 9.0c) I don't seem to see any "official" versions of DirectX 10 for WinXP, and it looks like DirectX 11 is for Vista/Windows7.

2) Safe to upgrade to Windows7 or not? The upside to upgrading would be that I'd be able to get more memory and take advantage of my 64bit processor. If I upgrade to Windows7, then I upgrade to DirectX 11 as well?

Thanks for the input!

The last version for XP was DX9.0c, Vista has DX10 and DX11 with SP2 and a patch, and Win7 is DX11. I'm currently playing DA: O on Windows 7 and I'm not having any issues with that quest, except for the constant dying. Have you applied all the DA: O patches yet?

What?

I finished the game 3 times and I have no idea what you're talking about. It never happened to me. I'm not talking about the freezing issue. I never got a cutscene like the one you are talking about.

It happened after Leliana told me about her being framed by her mentor in Orlais. Then the next time I went out on the road, we got ambushed by what appear to be assassins sent for Leliana. It's part of Leliana's personal quest, I guess, I'd be able to tell you more if I could get through the damn scene.

More information about the scene in question, including spoilers.

I have both 1.01 and 1.02, but yeah, still a problem.

Worse comes to worse I may be doing a system rebuild, if not an upgrade to Windows7. Is there some way to restore character settings on a fresh install so I won't have to start from scratch?

My Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age

Copy that entire folder, it has all your characters, saves, and settings. It may be in the "My Games" folder on XP.
