So recently I've taken to replaying Wild ARMs II. I haven't played this game since it's release, and I find myself just getting thoroughly raped by the bosses. I'm talking one shotted. I'm not even up to the second disc yet, and I'm baffled. I don't usually have problems with role playing games, and here I am just getting constantly defeated.

Then it dawned on me. I had always attributed my continued ease with role playing games with experience. Afterall, I've been playing them for decades now. That isn't really the case. Games have been dumbed down, and without realizing it I had forgotten some aspects that made beating them a lot easier. Kind of a gutpunch really.

What was one of the things I had taken for granted? In Wild ARMs II I was just going from point A to point B, and I wasn't leveling my characters adequately. You know, the whole "run in a circle in an open area and constantly fight until the area's monsters are one shottable." I'm not going to say that this particular time sink is necessary, or that I miss it in the newer games. Just that games in the past were certainly tougher on us than they are now.

I don't know... the updated FF4 on DS is pretty damn tough. Way harder than the original.

This is highly simplistic, and often false.

Taking it as truth for the moment though, the loss of fake difficulty is never to be lamented. Nintendo Hard Setting is not satisfying to overcome, and is a test of your patience in lieu of your intelligence, reflexes, or insight. Games have not been dumbed down of anything but tests of patience, and nothing of value was lost.

Except MMOs; they are still as ludicrously filled with fake difficulty as the days of yore.

We could talk about the hardest game, or we could talk about the hardest danmaku. If we aren't specifically talking about danmaku, it's kind of cheating to even mention one.

I had to Google that word, and HOLY CRAP ON A F***ING BISCUIT. UNPOSSIBLE..

They are far less unpossible than one would imagine. Try one of the Touhous, I enjoyed #10.

Not to mention the marisa B glitch to get dudes acclimated if they've never played one.

I'm going with DDR, because in order to be good at it, you need 1. Good hand-foot coordination and an innate sense of rhythm 2. Slab flooring in your house/apartment 3. to be in top physical shape 4. expensive equipment that needs to be regularly replaced.

My husband did competitive DDR for a while, until he injured his foot. I spent $70 and built him a sprung floor platform to take the pressure off it, so he could continue to exercise, but that was the end of the tournaments. Like an athlete, at that point he knew it was time to retire.

DDR isn't hard.

Having played it myself for several years, I can easily see how you can get a foot injury from playing.

Those NES games were hard as ****.

I think the Angry Nerd agrees that Ninja Turtles 1 for NES was the hardest POS ever. Or at least the most annoying

Sure, but having to explain that to people would be lame.

Honestly for me, FF1 was a very hard game. Mainly because it was my first ever RPG and I was something like 8. My cousin got it for his birthday and we played it nonstop. It seemed so epic when we beat those damn pirates and got our ship. Man, the earth cave was insane.

Now though I've played it a few times since and its not all that hard Still harder than many FFs though, especially due to no save points in dungeons. You can be going through the entire thing, one room from the boss and have something unfortunate happen and poof! Back outside with you, start over.

That and the old spell system where you had like ONE cure 2 and 4 cure 1 for the entire length of the dungeon. You really relied on those POTIONs. The PUREs were vital too, and so were the SOFTs, even though they were pretty expensive.

Hands down....That stupid Minesweeper game....

Okay in all seriousness, Everquest because I was like 8 when I played it and that stupid Estate of Unrest scared me to the point where I would basically chill in the courtyard running from trains. That entire game was scary at the time.
