So I know it's been a subject of discussion for as long as the 360 has been alive, and I know that a lot of people complain that "I had it for less than a year and it RRoD'd" but this is not the case.

I've had the 360 since launch. Whenever that was. But over this summer I've taken a hiatus from the XBox in favor of the computer. Recently, since hearing about the COD5's map pack 3, and Der Riese, I tried to start up a few times.

A few days ago I started up my X-box for the first time. And as soon as I get to the friends list, it freezes and dies on me.

Today I managed to buy the map pack, and play a game of **** Zombies: Der Riese. Two hours later (which is 2 minutes ago at the time of this posting) I wanted to play again. Booted up, got in the game, froze up, shut the console off, tried to reboot again, and lo and behold. The RRoD.

So, Zammers, what the hell do I do?

Try cleaning it out? Since you had it sitting idle for so long it filled with dust and is overheating?

Let's pretend for a second that I have no idea how to do that short of blowing in the disk drive and wiping off the disk.

Find the screws and unscrew them.

I would contact Microsoft before opening it up. I know they extended the warrenty on Xbox 360's since it was pretty much proved that almost 100% of all systems had this flaw. They may go ahead and replace it for you for free especially if you tell them on the phone you will just sell it and buy a PS3 or something.

Friend of mine was stupid and instead of having his fixed while under warrenty he decided to fix it himself. He fixed it and it worked about 5 months and died again. Now he has no warrenty since he broke the seal and a Xbox 360 that doesn't work anymore.

It don't cost anything to call them and ask, but once you break the seal you can forget about them doing anything for you. When mine rrod'ed on me I sent it back and they replaced it. Didn't have to pay for shipping or anything they were really good about it.

Getting them to send you a label is best. Sucks to be without your box, but least its under warranty.

It's not a bad idea if the console wasn't a launch unit meaning the 3 year warranty is up.

I guess your best bet would be to try and find a guide out there. Otherwise, I would just pick up an arcade unit. Most likely whatever they charge you to repair it will likely be as close to the cost of an Arcade. Then you'll have the renewed warranty and a much better build of a console.

I got them to send me a label after a bunch of fail happened. I wonder if I can play dumb about the fact I've had the console more than 3 years, or play the angry parent to get them to ignore it.

Seriously, I read there was a 53% failure rate. That's... bad.

Likely a bloated internet figure.

I seem to recall that even if the three year warranty is up they'll still replace it free if it RRoDed. There are other things that they won't fix, but since the RRoD is such a prevalent issue, they've decided to replacethem to keep their customers happy. They'll probably send you a refurbished one though.

Of course I'm dead tired right now and I could be just making all of that up based on a few rumors I may have heard once. It's probably best to just call up MS and see what they have to say.

that could have just been one guy who got lucky and ended up with a nice CS rep. though the one time i had to deal with MS CS they were nice, i forgot about my live renewing and it had been about half a month, and i hadn't logged din in probably 3 months, and they reversed the charges for me and canceled my account.
