Disgaea 3Follow

So I know this game is almost a year old, but I was surprised that no one has started a topic about it yet, at least not that I could find. I haven't played the other Disgaea games, so I don't really have much to compare it to besides the other tactical RPGs I've played, but I really love this game. It's freaking hysterical. Yeah the graphics REALLY suck for a PS3 game, but I could care less since the story line is so awesome and the game play is pretty cool too. The concept of a demon wanting to become a hero so he can overthrow his Overlord dad, because his dad stepped on his gaming system and destroyed it, just really amuses me. I love silly and random humor though.

Has anyone else played this game? What did you think? I haven't beaten it yet, as I've pretty much just played WoW for the last year, but I'm going to start playing it again within the next few days.

So get to it, and don't post again until you have a Horse's Weiner.

Because they are sprites or because they are bad sprites?

1 was better than 2. I haven't played 3. LaPucelle is better than Phantom Brave.

And try Atelier Iris, if you want more NIS stuff.

Klein.. I'm sleepy and scared. Can you sleep with me tonight?
But.. but.. the ESRB would go nuts!

The first two Disgaea games are pretty rare though, and I'm broke at the moment. I definitely intend on getting them at some point in the future though.

The sprites are good, but they are still sprites. I don't really care to much about the graphics quality, as long as the game play and story line are good, but I've read a lot of people complain about it, which is why I mentioned it. I read the topic on Atelier Rorona last night, and it definitely looks interesting. I'll have to see if I can get my hands on it when it's released. I just need to beat Folklore and FF 12 first, at the very least, before I can justify buying a new game, especially since I don't have much left to finish in FF 12, and Folklore is supposed to be relatively short.

EDIT: Mixed up Atelier Iris with Atelier Rorona.

There's a DS version of the first one that was rather easy to get ahold of.

That's odd really. Most of the time I don't hear people criticize sprites, but rather that the particular disgaea sprites are bad, which I agree with for the most part.

Eternal Mana is the only i've played.

Main character is a mage, which I highly prefer to the typical sword wielding dumbass. There's sort of a love story, 3 person party, turn based fights, 6 PCs iirc, very good character development, decent score, good humor, decent story, and the alchmey is really cool. You break down items on the field maps for elements and make stuff with them, from fireballs to potions to meteors.

Graphics are mostly sprite on pre-render, except the overworld, which is sprite on polygon (and that's a sin, frankly.)

Disgaea 1's pretty expensive iirc, but it's no Marvel vs Capcom 2 or Suikoden II or anything. I think its 35 used at gamestop.

But really, I'd go with the DS version if you can get it. That's probably only 35 new.

I liked the first Disgaea, the only one I've played. The grinding is comparable to a MMO game level that just eventually worn me out so I didn't do much after the first play through. That kind of grinding is too much for a single player game to my liking. I figured if I want to do that much grinding, I rather play a MMORPG where my achievements can be seen and shared for so much of the time invested. It doesn't help that I don't have local friends to do multiplayer battles with (DS version).

I've seen the DS game, but I didn't realize that it was a remake of sorts of the first Disgaea game. I had been wondering how it related to the other games. I'll definitely have to pick that one up when I have the money. I could use more DS games, I've only got FF3 and 4 for it right now.

Personally I don't mind grinding with Tactical RPGs. Each battle is different and requires a different strategy, which makes it less repetitive. This is more true for FF Tactics in my experience so far, than for Disgaea 3, but it's still infinitely better than grinding for traditional turn based RPG's where you just button mash.

You don't need to grind in the slightest bit to complete the main game, and honestly, the main game is the draw anyway. It's not like halo or something where no one gives a **** about the story.

Oddly enough, the original Disgaea game for the PS2 is available online at Gamestop's website for $18 used... and the 2nd for 25, whereas the DS version is 30 new and not currently available online nor does either of my local stores have it. Is there much of a difference between the original and the DS version? Playing PS2 games on my high def TV, even with the settings brought down to 480i is kind of yucky, plus I'm going on a 1300 mile road trip at the end of August, where a DS will be very useful, but the price difference is also a factor, even if it is only 12 dollars. Which one would you guys recommend?

I don't think there is any difference between the original PS2 game and the DS and PSP re-releases.

The PS2 version allowed us to select between Japanese and English voice tracks, DS is English only. The DS has multiplayer as is already mentioned.

I have a re-dub version of the DS game :) Just replace all the audio with the japanese.

If the dub on the original Disgaea games are as good as the dub on Disgaea 3, I don't think I would mind. The voices are funny as hell and really add to the silliness of the game. I'll probably just get the DS version, that way I can up my DS game collection to three. Anyone know if they're going to remake the 2nd Disgaea game for the DS?

Not sure, though they did release it for the PSP back in March, so I wouldn't be surprised if they did a DS version as well since the first one hit the PSP before it reached the DS.
