I'm surprised someone else hasn't created a thread about this game. Prototype is a game for the PC and 360 released around the same time as Infamous and with a similar concept. You're a person with extraordinary powers. In Prototype this takes the form of a viral infection giving you mutational abilities. You can run fast, lift cars, shape shift, glide, and form weapons from your body.

Prototype has some flaws. The missions are linear, the story is not exactly the most original, and some of the tasks are repetitive. However, at it's core it's a fundamentally solid game. It's a game about movement. Running up and around buildings, dashing and gliding between them, and grappling onto vehicles all feel very natural. It's a shame that you are given somewhat uninteresting terrain; there are plenty of tall buildings, but most fights don't involve anything useful to run around on.

It doesn't matter that I'm doing repetitive tasks because moving around is so much fun. Simply reaching the point to start a mission or event is fun, and that's all that matters.

Prototype has built a basic engine of movement that I've wanted to see in action games for a long time.

Compared to Crackdown, how does it rate in your opinion (assuming youve played that).

I haven't played crackdown, but I think the two are aiming for a very different feel.

Prototype does have an open world environment. When not on a mission you are allowed to freely explore the world completing special events (minigames), consuming web of intrigue targets (additional storyline information), destroying hives and military outpost for extra EP (exp), gathering landmark and hints (collectibles), or consuming military personnel to advance weapon and vehicle related skills. You do level up your mutant abilities with the EP you collect as well.

However, when you start a mission you enter a very linear game play mode. There is a little freedom in how you go about completing the tasks, but the objectives are usually very straight forward. IF you have to escort an APC then you can choose to escort it with a stolen tank or as your normal self, but you can't do something like lift up the APC and run it over to the objective or take out a hive to prevent enemies from spawning to attack it.

Prototype is very much about movement and melee combat. There is third person shooting, but it plays a very minor role, and unlike a game like god of war you're never just attacking--you're usually moving around a lot as part of your attacks.

If I want to take out a helicopter for example I will usually run up a building to gain some altitude, jump off it sideways, dash/glide over to the chopper, and either kick it to deal raw damage or use my tendril to latch onto it to hijack it. If I'm fighting a pack of hunters I usually won't try to take them on all at once--as that can be very painful. I'll run around the buildings a bit to try to lure one away from the others to finish him off so I can gain the extra health necessary to use one of my massive AoE attacks to finish off the rest.

I've noticed a trend. I don't like Yahtzee reviews on any game I've actually played, because while he's almost always very funny he almost always get many thing horribly wrong.

The whip arm is not a useful weapon, not unless you enjoy spending a minute to kill an enemy you could take out in 5 seconds with the blade arm. The whip is useful, but it's useful for latching onto helicopters or being a ***** and whittling down boss hp doing running jump charge attacks. You never use it on normal enemies because it's main use is for taking out hordes of weaker infected, but hordes of weaker infected can't do **** to Alex. Their attacks do no damage and they can't stun or knock you back. They're flies, and it's not worth the effort to swat them.

He awarded Infamous points for it's moral system really? The exact moral system he has been poking fun at and calling a terrible feature in every one of his reviews? Alex is never painted as a decent but wronged person. He's an ******* who wants to ***** the people who ****** with him. He doesn't care about the people of the city and he never pretends to care about the people of the city.

He probably got the whip and blade arms confused ability wise. The emo Peter Pan reference got me rofl for a good 5 minutes though.

He has and embraces a very strong genre bias, and is ostensibly a misanthrope. He doesn't attempt to give an objective look at the things he reviews, and instead goes purely with personal preference and experience, which is fantastic if you have similar tastes.

Sounds like how I'd describe Ninja Gaiden. If you stop moving in that game you die...

The gameplay sounds a lot like Infamous(putting it into context of something I've played). Though no vehicles in Infamous(or at least, I haven't run across em yet).

What level of detail do you get if you cleave someone in two? Can you see their internal organs? Do they spray out in a bloody gush or mysteriously stay glued inside? Can you kill babies? How about cats? Are there any ***** to kill? How about kittens? Dinosaurs? Giant robots?

I use his reviews for the pure entertainment factor. I don't take them seriously. This is how I take most critics and their reviews. I find basic ratings and reviews, like on amazon.com to usually be more useful in making my game buying decisions.
