I'm sorry if this is somewhere else, I have been unable to find the answer.

Do characters earn or are they given last names? It's probably a little thing but a lot of my character names are "last" names to begin with, so if I get that added at a later date, I'll name my new characters a little bit differently.

Very excited to try this game out!!

Oh, great! Thanks for the help. I've only gone through chargen with one character, and I'm still in the instanced starting area in Archet, so I may have missed it (there's so much to learn at the beginning, but it's pretty nice how it's laid out), do I pick my surname in chargen or is it, for example, upon reaching level 20 you're allowed to pick one?

At level 15(I think) you visit an NPC in the major cities and basically buy a surname. I can't recall what they call the NPC vendors, but I remember its in the Town Hall in Bree, and I think they usually place them near the "clerk of kinships", the NPC you visit to start a new kin.

Ok, the NPC's you visit are called Notaries. You can get your surname at 15 and it cost 10 silver. Notaries are also who you visit to create family trees amoung characters.

You will NOT be allowed to pick any surnames which appear in Tolkien stories though. So no Baggins, Took, Brandybuck, Bracegirdle, Proudfoot etc... for your hobbit.

Good deal, I actually kind of like that. I hail from WoW, and I actually tried an RP server for a while. I was surprised to find out that almost everyone was a relation to Arthas, Jaina, Thrall, etc. I've been very happy, so far, with both the community and the game feel that LotRO has, thank you all again for the info!

They actually seem to check the surnames in order to keep them from being anachronistic.

Dude, that's a $5 word for this 2-bit website...(apologies to Allakhazam :)) (Not quite sure the term even applies but I get what you are saying.)

But no, they do not check for this. You will see all kinds of weird surnames, in combinations with first names that have nothing to do with Middle Earth or Tolkien. And not all of these are dis-allowed by the ToS. Many times, Turbine will only enforce the ToS is if someone complains. So when you see 'Bradden Angeleena' running around you will know what I am saying...

What you will never see though is 'Bradden Took' or 'Angeleena Brandybuck.'
