So a friend convinced me to give this game a try, decided to give it a shot with the 10 day trial. I'm also coming from FFXI, surprised I read quite a few others were too. Anyhow, we got by the first intro: quest part which was fun, so now this may seem dumb, but are there certain quests we should target to advance a main story line?
I notice orange arrow markers on my compass, which there seem to be multiple ones of. Are these the "main quests" I should aim for? I'm guessing the Epic quests are the story ones, but who to talk to trigger them is my question.
Anyhow, I'll leave at that, I've only dabbled in the game, and if it's anything like other MMO's I've played, there's tons to learn.
I read the quests information here but it doesn't really state which is a main, unless there all good and I should just aim to do many.

story quests are categorized as such in your quest log, so don't worry about missing them. however, to get them, you still have to find the right NPC. when you leave your newbie area, you should get the proper information about finding a certain NPC, though, so you can't miss the first story quest.
beyond that, like any other quests, it may send you through many zones to talk to people, advance the story, etc. since others are doing it also, or have done it, you should be able to find in-game help from other players, though.
the arrows you see may be referring to locations (next big town etc) or if you have some skill tracking on, it shows you the nearby place that has some of the stuff you are tracking.

You have to enable the quest tracker beta in options. Other arrows you see on your compass are usually destinations of some sort. Mouse over them and they'll tell you what it is and how far away it is.
