Question for High Level playersFollow

#1 Apr 14 2009 at 10:24 PM Rating: Decent
Well im sorry if this question has already been asked a million times but i couldnt find the answer in the forums. I just purchased lotr and really just wanted a suggestion on race/class.. I use to play final fantasy and had a elvaan 75 nin 75 bst and a taru 75 rdm and 75 blm and i would have to assume this game has stronger/weaker job choices and races as does ff... I really enjoy playing solo and enjoyed beastmaster on ff, i know theres a couple jobs on lotr that have pets but i have no idea how strong/weak those jobs are. I dont want to spend a couple months getting to level 30 only to kick myself in the *** for picking the wrong race or class.. Whatever class and race solos the best suggestion would GREATLY be appreciated. Even if theres not a definate answer just a suggestion of a couple would be good and i can maybe research the rest by reading about the choices.. Thank you in advance for any1 that answers my question.

PS
If you dont have the time to explain why your suggestion is a good choice thats fine, just the suggestion is appreciated enough :)

Welcome

My first class that I took to was the hunter. I ended up enjoying him because of his self-porting ability. He travels all over the place doing errands for me.

I liked the captain next, because of his melee abilities. I found him to get stronger and better in the higher levels. I enjoy playing him a lot now.

The minstrel is the next class I liked. I have never minded the healing role, so that was just fine for me, but LOTRO minstrels are great at leveling. All their high-dmg attacks are instant or close to it, and ranged. You can take something out before it even hurts you.

I played the champion a little bit because I wanted to see what it was all about. Overall, with the melee aspect of the captain that I already played, I find the champion not to be my favorite, but it certainly can level through just fine. I take him up a level or two when I have some time and the others are kind of played out for a while.

Finally, my 5th character slot (before Moria) is the lore master. I haven’t found the pets to be good at taking damage, but essentially, you should think of them as a dot. The lynx is a funny pet because if you make him attack things in stealth mode, he can almost take out 30-50% (or more) of the monster’s HP. I also like the bear because with a wildpaw necklace, your bear pet is very huge. I wish there were bigger animal forms.

Which one do I enjoy the most? I continue to play all of them.

I recommend you try them out also. Pick a name you like because you never know if you’ll decide to keep that character. And even if you want to play another class, just keep it around until you’re really ready to delete it. Like me, you may find yourself like all the classes and characters you have created, to the point where it’s hard to delete them.

Unlike FFXI, race isn't huge factor when it comes to the classes. Yes there is differences but by lvl 20 or so they are more or less negated by equipment or traits. It really does come down to what race you like and if you prefer certain racial traits over others. Example; race of man gets a self heal, pretty handy but might not be a make or break for you if you really like being an elf.

For classes, I am of the opinion that hunters are one of the easiest to solo with just due to the skills they get that make them reasonably self sufficient. Yes you are a little squishier than a heavy armor class but having track and the ports makes many things easier and using traps wisely can help with the squishiness, just have to play smart to counter it. I have heard Loremasters are very good solo's as well but I've never gotten one past 12 yet so I can't confirm that.

I did play a captain up into the low 30's and he was quite a good solo'r but he just wasn't my cup of tea. With the heavy armor there is a good survivability there but you can get that with guardians and champions as well.

All in all I really love my hunter even if it does seem there are quite a lot of us running around.

I think every class and race can solo equally well, you just have to use the right techniques.

Each class can solo, but not equally.

Eg I love the fast dps of a minstrel but I can't go up against 3-4 equal level mobs since I don't have an aoe attack or heavy armor like champs (and probably guardians -- haven't played them to know but i figure they should have some kind of aoe attack).

additionally, even comparing my limited gear set as a champion, i've seen other same-level champions fare better because of their increased defense rating -- ie, they did instances or bought or made better gear to wear, often adding 500-900 more armor points than i might have.

However, as Wiffle said, taking your classes individual skills, you can do some things. A pet class can often do some quests because of running in and tagging some quest item while your pet handles the monsters around. A hunter can trap several targets and take them out as he needs.

And we know that wardens and rune keepers seem to have an above average dps, also depending on each character's gear set, i'm sure.

Emphasis on "right techniques".
