Game client freezing upFollow

My fiancee and I are both playing LOTRO and enjoying it, but she is having some bad problems. She can log in fine, and play for a while, but then the game freezes up. And not just a simple, frozen screen, but the whole screen appears faded with red and yellow "squiggly lines" across it. Occasionally the game will continue to run, but many of the game textures will be randomly changed out and the game will look very strange, but 9 times out of 10 it freezes up. She has to completely turn her computer off and restart it when this happens. We were first considering that it may be a heat problem, but this is not the case, as her GPU nor CPU ever get over 65 degrees C (we have been monitoring it religiously). We have updated her drivers, downgraded her drivers, defragged her computer and other things. At the moment we are getting another game for her to play to see if it is specific to LOTRO (we don't have another PC at the moment to try) but it does not happen when she is just in windows.

Her specs:

AMD Dual-core 2.3 Ghz CPU
2 gigs of RAM
NVidia Geforce 9800 GT
500-watt PSU
2x SATA Seagate HDD( 1x 500gb, 1x80gb) Not sure of the HDD speed. Probably 7200rpm
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Windows XP w/ Service Pack 3 32-bit

I am unsure of her motherboard. Does anyone have any ideas? The closest thing we could find online told her to disable stencil shadows which we did, but it did not fix it. Thank you in advance!

Make sure the graphics card gets all the power it's supposed to have. It may have another slot to add a power cable.

That kind of crazy graphics does seem to to cover drivers, but since you have tried the drivers solution, we'll try to think of other problems.

Oh, one thing to try -- does this PC freeze on other similar 3-D rendered games?

I have had a vid card that worked fine running the OS and 2D games all day long, but once I started up the 3D-heavy games, it would freeze within 30-60s. The reason turned out to be that the fan on the card was not running, which I wasn't able to tell right away because my CPU fan was so loud itself.

It seems like she has plenty of computer to run the game but what game setting does she run at? If you're trying to run full out at the max settings, I'll bet that is the cause of the issue. Try going into options and using the auto set up option to let the game look at her computer and set the quality accordingly.

From the specs you listed, I'd say she should be able to run smoothly a step or two below max.

Thanks everybody for the help! She has been running the game at Very High, which is what the client detected for her. She even turned it down some to see if maybe that was the problem.

I recently added a 9800 GT to my computer and it only had one PCI-e power plug on it, so I am sure it is not missing any power plugs or under-powered. Somewhat odd is the fact that my fiancee and I have close to the same PC configuration (both AMD, although different speeds, both 9800 GTs, both 500-watt PSU) and I have had no problems with the game whatsoever.

We have made a post on the technical support forums of LOTRO, but I am not sure if any Turbine tech staff ever actually respond to those posts, or if it is just there for community support.

Also, we are going to try to get some other game with similar system requirements and graphics tomorrow to see if it happens in another game, or if it just LOTRO. I will also report back with how that goes. Thanks again!

This is kind of off the wall but are you sharing the same DSL connection? I don't even know if it's possible but if your rig is hogging the connection, maybe she's not getting enough data to display the game...

Just a thought...

First, follow the instructions in this post VERY carefully. You should be able to run evrything on Ultra high by the tme you finish......

......except, there is a known issue wityh freezing while using <very high> textures. Set those to <high> in the advanced graphix in the options panel.

It should be a sweet runner after all that.

Hope this helps Smiley: nod
