That works on XP/Vista? I upgraded my computer, but the video card was defective and we're waiting to build the thing till we get all the parts. For now though, I'd like to find I good story driven FPS, or a western RPG (more Oblivion and less Morrowwind if you get what I mean, emphasis on fighting and hopefully real time, actually, a good oblivion clone would be good, till I can get the actual game with my better PC)

FPS's I played (Well, ones with story and are on PC)

HL2
Project:Snowblind
Vegas Series (Tom Clancy)

(Short list, please no WW2 games unless you think they are truely great)

Thanks!

Well, the obvious answers would be Fallout 1 and 2.

More of a western RPG mix.

Similar in storyline to Fallout 3, but not a FPS view. Kinda like Diablo in controls, slightly turn based (but not your classic RPG turn based system). It's real time.

Ya, Fallouts like, totally completely turn based as far as combat goes.

I have... but I didn't like it. I just remember getting jumps by giant scorpions in the desert and nearly dying.

I don't remember it being completely turn based though.

Baldur's Gate or any of it's derivatives. It's as real time or as turn based as you want it to be.

You allocate action points in fallout 1 and 2 for combat, which you get back every turn. I've never played it but I have watched it played and researched it heavily. Might ebay it one day once I run out of other games.

Nverwinter nights has better game play, but Baldur's Gate has a better story.

Baldur's Gate does the time of troubles; I don't think that NWN was based on a real dnd story.

Hordes of the underdark has a pretty good story though.

At the risk of sounding like a shill...

You can't go wrong with any of the of the Geneforge games, IMO. Not so hot in the sounds/graphics department (at least it keeps the system requirements low :p), but excellent story and gameplay. As far as gameplay goes, it's "real time exploration, turn-based combat" (though it still takes place on the same screen). While you only create the main character, you can summon up your own custom-made party of creatures to help you with the killing, or you can use fast talking and l33t machinery sk1llz to get you through sticky situations without getting your fancy robe dirty :p

Anyway, all of them are free to download and try out, you don't have to sign up or give out your email address or anything like that. They're all relatively self-contained, so you can more or less "jump right in" with the most recent one and not be TOTALLY lost (which isn't a bad idea, as the interface and technical aspects are so ridiculously improved over the previous games that it's not even funny, although if you have an older system you might not mind so much).

Anyway, that's my spiel, see you around.

EDIT: Oh yeah, personally, I liked the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games better than Neverwinter Nights, if only cause you weren't constantly struggling with a camera that's always everywhere BUT where you want it to be, and uncontrollable party members that can be charitably described as "moronic."

The only henchman I ever bothered hiring was Tomi, and only when I didn't multi into rogue. I made a sorc rogue once and it was just awesome (except for the fact that everything by tghe end has magic resistance.

Besides he gives good flanking damage while my fighters soak it.

Camera isn't so bad if you map it to the a and d keys. I always mapped a and d as camera, and the s as my inventory; move with mouse. Easy and simple.
