After feeling all nostalgic about this game for about a week or two, I decided to dust off the old Frontiers disc and give it another go. It was really fast to install and get running, nothing like any of the other mmo's I've deleted and then reinstalled (hours of patches, ugh!) I decided to start over on a new server (CLW) with a fresh character, as I've been gone since about a month after Frontiers came out and was pretty much as clueless as a real newbie would be anyway. I chose a human magician starting in Qeynos, as that is the city I originally started in the first time I played. The first few levels really whizzed by and then it slowed down a bit. I remembered reading something about paying 1000 tunare to get a boon potion so I started killing all the mobs around Qeynos, anything I could one-shot, until I got enough junk to sell to get my 1000. I bought one of the potions from the Qeynos announcement board and went to work. The xp gain was pretty nice, until I decided to see if I could handle a yellow. I did actually kill it and then died to poison. When I rezzed at the Spiritmaster, I noticed I didn't have the xp buff anymore! Ugh, out I went to grind a bunch more green mobs to get another 1000 tunare.
Once I had my new potion, I went out to find some more mobs. I was pretty much going after any lb and db I could find. I found a really nice camp at level 9, the Druidic Cadaver camp north of Qeynos. The mobs didn't hit hard at all and died fairly quickly. Got me to level 11 pretty fast. The whole time I was leveling up to 11, I saw a total of 4 people. One of them stopped to say hi, but didn't have a keyboard, so it wasn't a terribly interesting conversation. Something along the lines of "hi, u qstn?" "kk, me2, cya!". Those 2 "sentences" took the writer about 30 seconds to type. The quests haven't been to bad to do so far, but you really have to pay attention to what they say when they give them to you, or you'll be lost fast.
I tried out some tradeskills, seemed like it'd be an alright system but didn't play with it too much. Due to the lack of any sort of low-level economy, I might have to tradeskill all my gear, if that's even possible. I have no idea. I haven't gotten any gear drops off any mobs yet, but I'm not sure if that's because gear doesn't actually drop off them, if it's just that I'm still fighting mobs that are too low level or if I've just been unlucky so far. I've gotten a few tradeskill drops and I do plan on banking them soon, but so far I've needed to sell them straight to a merchant so that I can afford more boon potions. I haven't had to buy any food or water yet, as I can conjure water and I'm still working on the starting rations, but I have noticed that food and water are bloody expensive for a newbies wallet.
Side note: What's up with those Khal mobs outside Qeynos? They definitely don't look like they belong and they weren't there when I played a few years back. I keep worrying I'm going to mistakenly target one and get thumped badly while farming low level mobs for cash.
Hmm, places I want to revisit:
Rats Tomb
The Qeynos Prison (fond memories of grinding mobs there)
Can't remember any more at the moment. I wasn't terribly high level when I quit the first time, but I did explore a lot, I was pretty good at evading red con mobs.
So anyway, I don't know if anyone is even going to read this or if this board is officially dead, but I thought I'd give a quick rundown on what it was like for me to start out again. I am actually having fun and I plan on playing my way up to the higher levels. I hear there's actually groups and raiding going on. I read a bit about Hunt and Gather quests being the best way to level up now, so I'll have to dig up any old info I can on those. My magician's name is Archatius and I'm on CLW, so if any of you still play and are on that server, don't be afraid to say hi! I'm pretty independent and I don't mind long grinds solo, I played a necro as my main in the original EQ. This is actually the game that got me started on the PC Everquest!
Heh, enough rambling for now!
