WoW on a flash driveFollow

#1 Feb 09 2009 at 2:58 PM Rating: Decent
Any reason I couldn't install WoW on a USB flash drive that I could pop into any computer I come across to log in and play a bit? Mainly I have a work laptop and do not want it installed directly on it. I figured with a big enough drive I could install/play from it.
Now if I could keep the admins from tracking my web connections I could play at work....

The only thing stopping it would be access speed of the USB drive (possibly too slow for it to read, causing loading issues). And the fact that the computer you plug it into would need to have the proper registry entries pointing to the correct drive letter, etc.

It's possible, but you'd basically have to install the game on the laptop to the drive. And then all the registry info would be there for anyone to see the game installed.

And of course it could crash because the access speed of the drive isn't fast enough.

I don't think you even need registry entries. I've plugged a USB hard drive into a computer and played WoW directly off of that without any installing.

I'd think a portable external would be preferable over a flash drive, but I suppose it could work.

I want to say that I tried it at one point and had problems, but my memory is hazy so I could be thinking of something else.

Having recently tried this with FFXI I would definitely recommend an external hard drive over a flash drive. For one thing you'll need a a 16gb drive, I don't think and 8gb would cut it, and at least in the case of FFXI you need the registry entries. It does work however, I can play FFXI on my Mini 9 Smiley: thumbsup

If you have an iPod you can use that as a portable hard drive and it won't affect music playback.

Of course, there is always the option of, you know, doing work at work. Instead of spending time figuring out complicated ways to slack off at work, why don't you use that energy to learn new skills for your job or find some kind of training that could get you a promotion or ... hahahahahaha I can't believe I got that far.

My preferred method was bringing in my own laptop with WoW installed on it, and leeching a free wifi connection from one of the restaurants nearby.
