i would say any mmo these days would be extremely difficult to play on a dial up connection, hate to say it but if you intend to play online games then you really will have to get yourself a broadband connection, never mind the latency issues with dial-up which would cripple your gameplay anyway, there is also the degree of patching from initial installation etc, you'd have to download too!
eve online has often been compared to iain m banks culture, which is a bit like saying that lewis carrols novels were comparable to world of warcraft ;D
it is though a fairly open ended, player driven environment, rife with piracy, corporate and freelance mining, trade and espionage, and lots of people with heavily armed spaceships :D
all playing on the same server... most days you log on your going to see at least 40k people online, and graphically it looks stunning... if any game was worth getting broadband in order to play it, then eve is that game :D
