New Player needs adviceFollow

#1 Dec 26 2008 at 4:09 PM Rating: Decent
I am trying the game out on the 14 day trial. Over 2 more hours left on my update (with DSL).I was a Star Wars fan since I watched the first one (in the 70's)5 times at the movie theater.
I never started this game until now because I heard a lot of bad about it. But I got bored with World Of Warcraft (played since beta). I don't really want to build my 70 undead shadow priest to level 80 just because they decided on some lame expansion. So, what the hell, I'm finally here. lol

Feel free to offer other advice besides just answers to my questions.

Some questions:

1. I've read about scouts. What profession is a scout?
I have been thinking about making a scout. Is it true they start cities? I guess they can erect buildings. I guess a scout also gathers resources. If it isn't too boring I figure it's a way to make money.

2. Does the architect finish the city once a scout starts it?

3. There are sites that offer downloads of patches for games like WOW. Does this game have any faster sites to get updates from than the sony website?

Thanks for your help everyone. At this point I think I would rather build a character her to 90 than build my WOW char to 80. lol

Update:
I looked around and I believe there are no scouts anymore. Nobody seems willing to give me some simple advice. Most of the info I find is from 2005. I see why people quit before they get very deep into the game.

1) Scouts no longer exist, they were disposed of when the number of professions was reduced from 27 to 9, I believe what used to be the Scout profession is now part of the Spy profession.

2) The whole approach to cities was also changed, it used to require someone with the Politician profession to run cities but now pretty much anyone can start a city assuming there is space and all city structures are made by Architects aka Structures Engineers.

3) Not that I know of.

Leveling in this game is a breeze, I took a new character on the Test Center from 0 to 90 in 6 days playing roughly 2 hours a day and just questing (10xTerminal Missions and the Legacy quest along with Kashyyyk and Mustafar quests).

I agree that one of the problems with this game currently is the plethora or pre-NGE (2005) websites and the disgruntled vets that go along with it however if you are prepared to put the time into it and find a good guild this is a fun game and not all that different to what it was pre-NGE despite what people tell ya.

One recommendation I do have is not to choose a server just yet make characters on a few servers and try out the communities on each but make sure you pick a server that is designated a "transfer to" server as they are beginning a server consolidation process and you probably don't want to be left on a "transfer from server"

I would pick one of these servers...
* Ahazi
* Bloodfin
* Bria
* Chilastra
* Eclipse
* Europe-Chimaera
* Europe-FarStar
* Flurry
* Gorath
* Radiant
* Shadowfire
* Starsider
* Sunrunner

Thank you for your reply and the info.

Two more questions if you don't mind:

1. Which profession builds and uses the harvesters? They are vehicles that harvest resources right? Resources like metal.

2. Is there a way to configure the game to move my character using my mouse? Keyboard maneuvering is hard after playing Quake for a few years, Ultima Online for 5 years, then WOW for 3 years. I'm a mouser. lol

1) Star Wars is tricky in that all professions including combat ones can place harvesters to gather resources however only traders get harvester bonuses and the ability to survey larger areas at once.

The profession that can make the largest harvesters is Structures Trader (44 BER - Base Extraction Rate) however all trader professions can make the smallest harvesters (4 BER).

2) Yes you can configure the game to use mouse movement:

- Press O to bring up the options menu.
- Select the "Keymap" option.
- Check the button that says either: ( the bottom half of the screen)
A) Middle mouse Drive Movement.
B) Mouse left and right drives movement.

and you are in business.

But I agree, the one thing they desperately need to do to this game is sort out the interface, everything is there its just a pain in the **** to find.

the closest thing now to a scout is a spy

the NGE removed alot of RPish stuff like scout to make the game more combatty. i was a scout then and everyone just clowned on me for being one and not going further to become a bounty hunter, which scout was a requirment for.

i soon found scout to be a lonely existence. its not like there was a plethora of scouts running around doing scout stuff or a scout community, they were just considered noobs by the elite which comprised of combat medics, bounty hunter and jedi.

you can still do what scouts did best- harvest meat, hide, and bone, and sell it, its just you don't have to be any specific prof to do this now. all can do it to any creature corpse.

it was also a pre-requisite for ranger, which was one of my favourites, moving through the wilderness undetected, and knowing when a beast had started tracking you so that you could 'lose' it were just part of its appeal, exploration and the ability to keep your armoursmith/tailoring guildmates in supply of the necessities were fun, carbines or rifles wasnt a bad skill to add to the mix either.. i miss those days.. anyone who says this game is not significantly different from pre-nge really wasnt there or didnt understand the game anyway.

Scout was also a pre req for creature handler.

As far as people considering scouts 'noobs', I don't know about that. Going with the rational that people want to kill stuff, who do you think got the resources for the doctors to give them elite bounty hunters, and combat medics buffs? That's right, scouts (or any profession that had them as a pre req.)

Yes, it is a shame there are a lot of out of date websites still out there giving out bad information. It is hard to say what the best thing to do is for getting information. I never really cared for the O boards, but, it is still a good starting place.

I tend to use swg-wiki a lot for up to date data although even that can be confusing.

for WOW there is thottbot, but for SWG there is.. very little really, wow probably owes as much of its popularity to the plethora of 3rd party addons that make life easier, from bartender to questhelper, a few of these kinds of applications wouldnt be a bad idea, though its fair to say that SWG doesnt really have the same kind of range of quests or activities that WOW does, i've noticed that people tend to like gadgets anyway ;D

Come on Cloud...you know how MMO's feel about botz. They will rain on your parade if you are caught using them...in a big way. I thought about using one...now 2 and half years in....I'm not loosing my account because I want something to be easier. John Q. Public is lazy...unfortunatly that seems to be the theme in the last couple of years. Do less for more...the thought or working at something scares people or they just don't want to put the work in. MMO's do in fact require work...even though they are "Games". You kinda have the mentallity that plays into that some work is fun, and through life fun is always work. Wether is be Am. Football, Eurp. Futbol, Paintball or playing with your proverbial ballz. all takes effort.
