So I know that you can make a copy of media you buy (it's the sharing that's bad).
I own/ed Fallout 3 for 360 and decided that I was done with the game. Before I traded it in for credit at the local game store, I downloaded a pirated copy of the PC version. Does that count as a back-up copy, since I still have the receipt proving purchase of the game? Or is it theft because it is a different platform?

With the Digital Millenium Copyright Act and such, you cannot download your backups.

Any distribution, regardless of whether or not you own the original, or are making money off of it, of copyrighted material without permission from the owner is illegal.

They can't _really_ stop you from making your own backup (but they do try, with all the DRM and such) but you cannot legally download backups.

The majority of the "rules" you read on various websites are lies. That includes the number of "backups", the "24 hour" rule, etc.

So no, the copy you downloaded for the PC not legal.

Really?

Why bother? Do you really think Bethesda Softworks is going to chase you down?

If they really cared that much, I'd be in big trouble if nintendo or sony saw my HDD. Though I guess they shouldn't care too much about SNES, NES, SEGA, or PSX too much, seeing as they aren't even making them anymore. But the NDS games... they might.

Seriously, no. I'm not deleting it, I just said that for posterity. I have a PSP full of Genesis, SNES, Gameboy/advance, and NES games. I owned most at one point, but I'm not getting rid of them after learning that. Smiley: lol

Edit: Anyway, I had some 'trouble' deleting it and now I guess I'm stuck with it. Smiley: frown

I hate DRM and all that bullcrap.

Decided, after using Alcohol 120%, that I wanted to make images of all my games so I didn't have to keep changing DVDs/CDs (My computer is located at the end of my bed, and I lay/sit on my bed to play it).

About 4 of the games I loaded up work, the rest say the cd isn't inserted, or please insert the original cd....pisses me off.
