I just finished this game last night. If you own a PS3, I very strongly recommend it.
I guess you could say it's an SRPG, but the view is that of a 3rd person shooter rather than an isometric like most SRPGS type view.
The graphics are freaking beautiful. The music is fantastic.
There was even a point in the game where I cried a little. I got into it that much.
Check it out:

I played the demo a month or so ago, it's a bit of an odd game, not that many to be found like it, or not in my local stores anyway.

Special, but fun, I'm still in doubt about getting it.

I'm really looking forward to getting this game, but I'm probably going to wait till I can find a used copy.

I played the demo too. At first I wasn't terribly impressed. Then I played it again, and there just seemed to be something there, so I took the chance and bought it. The demo doesn't really begin to do the game justice. It's from very early in the game. It does give you a good idea for how the battle system works, but it only introduces you to a fraction of the type of stuff you'll run it. The last few missions had my jaw on the floor. I was like, "you want me to do WHAT?" It was a good challenge, but not so hard you're all, "MAN @#%^ THIS GAME."
Just right on length too, I think my final save game had about 34 hours on it, but that was with me doing all the extra side missions and skirmishes that aren't required.
It does offer you a "New Game+" type mode when you beat it. There are a couple of extra side missions and "Hard" mode is unlocked on the skirmishes. I'm tempted to take that for a spin, but I sorta want to start playing Disgaea III.

My friend purchased it; I have been playing a bit and watching him play the rest.

Valkyria Chronicles is simply a better version of Fire Emblem. It takes the basic TRPG style of combat and Fire Emblem style of story telling and character focus and takes all the good elements while discarding teh bad.

Characters can die, but it is far more difficult to kill them and the game is far more forgiving than in FE. Rarely will you need to reset because of a single character death. The character strength pacing is excellent, having primarily story based upgrades that prevent you from being too overpowered too early and set a benchmark, while allowing for character levels to serve as flex room for those who feel more or less confident. Gone is the entirely story based exp full of missed opportunities as you can level indefinitely in skirmish if that suits your fancy. Each individual move of combat is far more entertaining than in FE as well.

The story is a little weak, but it can be forgiven. This is perhaps the most enjoyable RPG out this generation.

psh, I've yet to find a more well done srpg than Path of Radiance, but I guess it's possible. I kind of like the grueling and unforgiving nature of fire emblem though (except for radiant dawn that was just too ******* hard; I'm looking at you boss with 200 hitpoints that heals by 60 every turn with enormous defense that is surrounded by 8 little bosses that reflect half of all damage done to them and also heal for 60 damage per turn)

Dont forget there should also be the Edy Nelson DLC side missions coming soon, as well as the Imperial DLC.
