Galaxies crashes to the desktop after clicking playFollow

#1 Nov 30 2008 at 12:00 PM Rating: Decent
Hey all, I'm new to the forums and have a question that maybe someone could answer. My cousin just got galaxies and updated it and everything, but he can't play the game itself. The Launchpad comes up and then he clicks play, then the Launchpad disappears and an hour glass pops up, but nothing happens. The game doesn't load after that point and hes left staring at the desktop. Does anyone know what this problem is, and how to solve it? If so, that would be great. He and I really want to play online, but obviously can't if the game won't even start for him.

Thanks

Sounds to me like a corrupt game file, outdated DirectX version, outdated drivers, antivirus and firewall interference.

1) Run a file scan from the launch pad.
2) Check to make sure his directX, video and sound drivers are up to date.
3) Temporarily disable his anti-virus and firewall (if this works then switch them back on one at a time to determine the individual problem).

one other thing to try is:

I copied this from the main forums...

Crashing to Desktop

The most common type of crash is the crash to Desktop. The game itself stops responding or simply closes, and the player is left looking at their normal Windows desktop. Most of the time, an error message is presented. Some error messages are very useful in determining the cause of a crash, but others are rather generic.

The first step to troubleshooting a crashing issue is to rename the "Profiles" folder in your Star Wars galaxies directory to something unique (such as "profiles1" and then to delete the following files from your main Star Wars Galaxies directory:

* client.cfg
* live.cfg
* login.cfg
* options.cfg
* preload.cfg

Once this is completed, you should locate the file "TREfix.exe in your Star Wars Galaxies directory. pelase double-click this file to run it. Once it has completed, please close all open folders and files, and start the launchpad. Be sure to toggle a Full Scan from the Launchpad before playing.

The standard install location for Star Wars Galaxies is C:\Program Files\Star Wars Galaxies\ If you installed the game to a different directory, you will need to navigate to that directory instead.

I've tried everything: checked directx (which is the right version), updated the video card's driver, ran a full file scan, put the game in the exceptions list of both the firewall and av program, disabled both, etc. etc. etc., and the same thing happenes every time. I also did that thing you were talking about from the main forums (which also didn't help) and the only weird thing was that the options.exe file was nowhere to be found, which was really odd—could that be where the problem lies? If so, where can I get that file?

What else is there for me to do? I can't think of anything else. Anyone ever experience this before???? This is getting so old....an what's even worse is that this is the purchased downloadable version, which is non-refundable.....we have to get to the bottom of this, or he's going to want his money back, and fast. I've never encountered this before, it's very weird, not happening on my computer.

Thanks again, and keep the advice coming if you could.

Are you trying to launch the game from the station launcher or the game icon?

There have been problems with the station launcher going to desktop after play was selected.

I'm launching it from the Launchpad. Why, should I be using the icon? I always thought the Launchpad needed to be loaded in order for you to login and then play the game, that you can't just click on the desktop icon. So wouldn't I need to used the Launchpad anyways in light of this?

I've been clicking Play on the Launchpad and then nothing happens, an hourglass pops up for about 5 seconds and then I'm left starting at the desktop, no loading screen or anything. And, Galaxies is absent from the processes list in task manager after clicking play, which is odd in and of itself and I have no idea why.....

Well I am not sure what you are using but can I suggest checking out this site and downloading the station launcher if you are not already using it, I don't know if it will help or not but its worth a try.

I'm using the Launchpad, the one where you have to consent to the EULA and then login and click play. I think it's the same one you linked to, the Launchpad.exe program. But either way, shouldn't this not be happening? Would giving me dxdiag help at all?

I'll try what you gave me though. Thanks again

If it is Vista this is was also recommended on the main boards...

1. First, locate your Star Wars Galaxies shortcut.

2. Right-click your shortcut, and click properties (see below)

3. Click the tab labeled "Compatibility" (highlighted in red)

4. Ensure that your compatibility window reflects the contents in the window below (highlighted in red)

5. Press "OK", then run Star Wars Galaxies!

NOTE: If you are running the Windows Aero Interface, you MUST ensure that the "Disable Visual Themes" box is checked.

I really don't know I would still be leaning toward it being either a:

- Faulty installation (corrupt SWG file)
- Driver issue with Video or Sound.

Hopefully someone with more software knowledge will be able to solve this for you.

Have you tried the support forums on the SWG main site?

As far as the faulty installation goes, shouldn't a Digital Download be flawless, I ran a full scan and it said everything was fine. Is there another way to check if the files are fine?

And for drivers, he has no sound card, and the video card driver was updated last week.

Anything else that might by a long shot be causing this?

The only other thing I can think of is to go around the station launcher and set up your own icon.

Some people do have issues with the launcher, I only use it as an easy way to switch between the Test Center and Live servers, setting up a direct login icon will give you access to the game options menu which I cant seem to find with the launcher.
