Yet Another Reason to Hate GamersFollow

#1 Oct 23 2008 at 7:50 PM Rating: Excellent
WAIT! Before you hit that big red arrow, let me explain.

I am a gamer. I do not hate gamers. In any way, shape, or form.

But thanks to issues like this, gamers (or just video games, specifically) are viewed as bad.

Look at GTA. When people do things like the Hot Coffee Mod, it devalues the industry as a whole.

It doesn't take a genius to see that anyone who beats someone else for RuneScape items and money has some issues, but the thing is, people, especially those who don't play video games, are going to look down on video games.

Anyone remember Jacko the Whacko Thompson?

I guess what I'm getting at is this: Incidents like these just bug the crap out of me, because it gives people a reason to devalue something I find very enjoyable, simply because every one out of about 600 million people decided to do something or break some law, and blame it on video games (or in this case, do it because of video games).

It's like saying, "Well, that one guy went crazy with that spoon and stabbed everyone in the face, so now nobody can be trusted with a spoon. Eat your soup with forks."

Yes, I know this has been brought up before. Yes, I know it usually sparks flamewars. But I just needed to vent. Every time I see something like this, I pull out my soapbox and get ready for some good old-fashioned ranting.

I gave you a green arrow purely for this comment. Well played.

The victim resisted and ended up in a fight with the suspect and a friend who was also in the room. The defendant was charged with kicking the victim's head and body and trying to strangle him. The victim claims he was threatened with a knife and said he would have been killed if he didn't obey.

After the fight the defendant took the victim's virtual money and goods, moved it to his account, then logged out, according to the charges.

That's some crazy sh*t right there. Smiley: disappointed

Unfortunately, video games are easy scapegoats. People blame the video games because it's easy and then they don't have to think. Because thinking hurts.

I also rated you up for this. Very nice. Smiley: lol

In my Eng101 class, we had to write a current topic in the news. I wrote mine on how video games are beneficial to kids. Gots me an A+ and convinced a teacher that doesn't have a TV in her house to get her kids a couple DSs.

The theft kid was only charged with the stealing of virtual goods?

Wtf?

He almost beat a kid to death, but isn't charged on that?

Anyways.. a post like this was posted in the WoW forums yesterday about a Women over in one of the Asian worlds who stole from her Online Husband when he divorced her. She was fined.

And people do need to stop blaming video games on things. My parents even do it on me and sometime my bros.

"Yea mom, I stole your car and robed a bank because I do it on GTA all day and thought WTF, I'll do it IRL too" (i've never done either..)

Reading this reminded me of a story I saw on BBC News the other day. Virtual murder is a crime as well.
