New to LOTRO, some questions.Follow

Hello!

As you can see I'm new to LOTRO. I've played FFXI for 4 years or so, and wanted a change, and this looked to fit my style. I've been doing a lot of searching but I'm still left with a few questions.

First of all, I've looked through both the Lorebook and Allakhazam and neither database seems to have quest walkthroughs. I know quests are much more straightforward than in FFXI (which are impossible without online guides), but I was just wondering if there's a database somewhere.

My next questions are harder. What are the customs and courtesies like in LOTRO? For example last night I found a bunch of goblins beating on a level 5 character. I helped kill some because I figured he was going to die, but in FFXI it is considered very rude to attack monsters someone else is fighting. What are the standard conventions here?

And what about fellowship? I know you can solo to 50 if you want, but do some people form exp parties (mandatory in FFXI), or are fellowships just for quests? And what about kinships? Are they stable and constant? I've been in the same linkshell (equivalent) in FFXI for well over a year, we have forums to keep in touch out of game too.

I guess my last question is endgame. I've read some similar threads on here but I haven't really gotten a feel for what endgame is like. Is it mostly instanced? Are there high level monster camps? I only have FFXI to compare to, and historically FFXI endgame is monster camps (HNM), with a few instanced/pseudo instanced events (Dynamis, Limbus, etc). Do you do endgame events with the same Kinship?

I know that's a lot, sorry. If anyone's played both FFXI and LOTRO who could help explain these that'd be awesome, thanks.

The database is building. Most quests are catalogged here at Alla's and elsewhere, but some are lacking detail, as well as reward info.

If the other person has the tag on the monster (the monsters health bar will appear white to you), then you can help at no expense to the victim getting beat on. The person who 'tags' the mob will get the xp and looting rights. It was a bit weird for me to have people just stop and help me fight a mob - something very different from EQ, but now that I'm used to it, it's nice, and I try and extend the coustesy. There are some who will still take offense at unasked for help, but it's pretty infrequent.

Yes, to most all the above. This is an MMO, and I'm guessing much like FFXI, it's as social or individual as you choose to make it. People will group up just to complete a quick quest, group up to spend an evening crawling a dungeon, or simply group up for company. There are many well established kins now of all types; hardcore raiding kins, PVP kins, or simply casual family type kins.

I've not played FFXI, but endgame content is mostly all instanced zones that come with lock out timers. The hardest content atm is probably the "Rift". It's usually tackled with a 12 person raid (that's max). There is one other raid zone that you can have up to 24 person raids (Helegrod). There are a few other single boss mob type raids as well. There is also a fair amount of 'endgame' content for groups, again most of it instances. There is also the Book line of quests - that get increasingly difficult as the 'book' continues.

Welcome to Middle-earth.

I was never a mooglef**ker, so I won't try to compare the games(Mora should be able to help you there), but as for your questions about fellowships and kinships, there are always PUGs(Pick Up Groups) around to help with some of the tougher quests. Quests in LOTRO are flagged as solo, small fellowship, and fellowship. Solo quests should be able to be done by yourself, but go faster with help. Small fellowship quests can generally be done with 2 or 3 people, fellowship quests require 5 or 6 member fellowships. Kinships sometimes die off, but most that have solid leadership withstand the test of time. Our unofficial Alla kinship has been around since beta, and is still going strong.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I'll fit in here!

Haha, mooglef**ker. Who's Mora?

Hi, I would be Mora, I played FFXI off and on for the past 3-4 years, LOTRO is a very nice alternative to it. LOTRO is story driven and PvE focused like FFXI, and since you say you're looking for a change, I think Lotro would be perfect. Now for some of your questions:

In my opinion, a good kinship will last longer than a good ls. Especially since LOTRO isn't gear driven. I've been in TiNFs for....a year and a half and counting?

Endgame in Lotro is not really endgame compared to other mmo's (yet) True End-game type model is coming in the Mines of Moria expansion. You won't be camping anything as time consuming as a HNM. Endgame is more of a WoW style mixed with casual gaming and less gear focus (somewhat).

Lotro does have some event driven things like the battle instances but its much more casual, and the rewards are novelty at best.

P.S. I hated Dynamis

That sounds great Mora, I hated HNMs (and refused to camp them after 2 or 3). Dynamis isn't so bad now that they've upped the droprate of icelands, but yes, 3 hours of constant event get very tiring. I'm glad to hear LOTRO is much more relaxed, though that leads to another question: If LOTRO isn't gear driven, and you in fact say that gear rewards are novelty at best, what incentive to people have to do events after the first few times?

Oh, I was speaking purely about the battle events, but instance runs can be quite worth it gear wise.

Battle events are just something fun that turbine added last update to keep people interested. It was actually successful. They tied it to a world event which involved turning in items, and fighting boss monsters controlled by GM's during the high peak times. After the servers met the turn in req. the battle instances unlocked, scripted fights that lasted between 30-45 mins (it could be defending keeps, attacking enemy keeps, or both - quite stressful when timed) and offered just some fun/random/novelty rewards for participating and beating them.

I was just trying to make a point of reference that you could understand.
I'd suggest looking up some articles on the Mines of Moria to see a glimpse of the end-game to come. (Legendary Items would be a good starting point)

One last question, maybe...

Are there such things as equipment macro swaps? For Hunter for example, should I have a set of gear dedicated to ranged skills, then a set dedicated to melee skills that I would swap in when enemies get in range?

As probably the only melee hunter on the server, maybe I can help out.

There aren't any macros to switch gear. What I do is dedicate a bag to my melee gear. Just right-clicking a piece of gear from a bag (you can open individual bags with CTRL + F1-F5) will equip it and unequip whatever you currently have equipped. Basically, I have a few pieces that give +Might and +Vitality for my melee build, plus a couple of weapons (both of which have +1% parry chance, as well as decent dps), and my ranged build is +Agility and +Fate items, with +ICPR (in-combat power regen) weaponry.

Your bow will always be equipped. Whether in your melee build or ranged build, you can shoot at something. Also, there are only five melee attacks as a hunter, none of which check for offhand damage. So having a slow, hard-hitting weapon like a mace or axe in primary, with a quicker weapon such as a 1h sword, dagger, or club in the offhand, tends to be a good way to go.

Compared to FFXI, there is practically no gear swapping.

You get a limited number of 'slots' for traits that you earn. I think many swap out traits frequently depending on the situation (I do on my Minstrel all the time), but not gear so much. Swapping traits, however, can't be done on-the-run as you have to visit a bard to actually do it (there's a Bard located in most towns).

Thanks a ton for all the advice guys, I've been happily playing for a week now. One thing that is confusing me is the mastery items for crafting. For example, Bronze Axe in the allakhazam database is listed as having a mastery item of a Dirty Neekerbreeker Eye but in-game when I click on the mastery options for the Bronze Axe it tells me to use a Clouded Eye. I understand that I can trade in the Neekerbreeker eye and get a Clouded eye, but will the Neekerbreeker give me extra crit chance all by itself? And what about the other eyes that can be traded in for a Cloudy eye?

The crafting system was revamped some time ago. The old system required very specific items to increase crit chances, like the neekerbeeker eye. When they revamped crafting, they made the items that increase crit chances drop from more mobs. Depending on your crafting tool, you'll have something like a 6%-24% chance to crit an item. Adding in the optional item increases your crit chance by as much as 50%.

Do we get some more slots for traits?

Edit - Oops, I put this in the wrong thread.
