Coming from FFXI... questionsFollow

Hi. I'm thinking of coming to this game from FFXI. I was a pretty hardcore FFXI player and I'm looking for a change from the long camps, and time-consuming mundane events. What are the big differences in the 2 games. Does this game offer quality events once your character reaches level 50? Also, what is a melee class in this game that has good versatility and solos very well?

I know it's kinda hard to believe, but everything can solo from 1-50 with relative ease. Certain classes do better at soloing various difficulty mobs, though. Basically, the progression is this:

Swarm < Normal < Signature < Elite < Elite Master < Nemesis < Arch-Nemesis

Elites, for the most part, can be done by just about anyone. Not readily, though, except for a few classes. I can take only one on both my hunter and captain, often burning cooldowns if they're rather tough. Minstrels, Guardians, Champions, and Lore-masters tend to be very good at taking down Elites and Elite Masters.

There aren't really any long-term camps. The most bottleneck deal you'll come into contact with is, if you roll a Captain, Hunter, or Minstrel, the need to get Helchgam's Slime from a boss in Carn Dum. Everyone likes them, because they're in demand for three rather nice legendary traits, and they tend to be hideously overpriced on the auction hall.

Aside from that, grinding deeds at a higher level can be somewhat annoying, but nowhere near as time consuming as EverQuest or FFXI are. You can take a character from 1-50, with decent gear, decent trait levels, in probably a month, month and a half casual gaming.

Yeah, I'd say some of the current end-game content is quality. The Rift, CD, BG, etc have some fun questlines and tricky encounters. There are quite a few 'instanced' encounters in various other areas that are fun, though I'm not really sure that's what you mean by events. Actual GM events seem to be mostly non-existant excepting as content, or storyline introduction.

I like my Minstrel and have found the class to be a good all around soloer. I've also found that a Minstrel duo can conquer much of the groupable content.

Didn't see the comment asking about the melee classes. Basically... well... everything can melee to a degree. The melee-heavy ones are:

Champion -- Heavy armour-wearing, dual-wielding damage-per-second-dealing machines. They do dps, they can tank well, and they excel at Area-of-Effect damage.

Guardian -- Tank class. Heavy armour, heavy shields. No dual-wielding, though. Decent DPS when in the "Overpower" stance.

Captain -- Jack of all trades, master of none. Limited self-healing, they can heal others, they wear heavy armour and use damaging Halberds. They have the choice between using a Herald or a Standard to assist them in combat. They're also by far the best buffing class in the game.

Burglar -- Debuffer. They do decent burst dps, though they can't sustain it. Highest or second-highest single-hit melee damage in the game, I believe, with a critical on Surprise Strike from behind. Think of backstab, except for the fact that you can do it with a mace. Insane evasion rates also gives them a decent evasion-tank ability.
