It seems as though there are a lot of threads about people returning to the game lately, perhaps because of the expansion looming ahead. I played EVE for about 3 months a year or so ago, and all I did was mining. I joined a corp within a month and was pressured into mining and hauling which I did enjoy but quit because I was still playing a different MMO, so i really don't have a good view on how the game was.

I had to quit final fantasy a few months ago because I started college, and it is far to time intensive of a game for me now. So my first question is can I be a successful player without making it my "second life"? I can log on every day to change my skills and such, that's no big deal, I'm talking about actual play time, which I could only manage on weekends.

Also provided I do return I'll want to do mission running at first, and maybe move to PvP eventally. What would be a good race to start with? I like how the Amarr ships look the best I think, but looks aren't nearly as important to me as blowing **** up effectively.

Any other suggestions or comments or whatever would be greatly appreciated!

Oh and one more question. What is the general consensus on the longevity of the game? Lately it seems as though many MMO's are getting ready to give way to next gen MMO's in the next 5 years or so. Considering the way EVE works it seems like with graphics and content updates it really could go on until people can hop in a spaceship of their own.

my own personal preference is minmatar... but... with the differences between the races, amarr use beam weapons, caldari use missiles, minmatar use projectile weapons.. ... the one thing for sure is that it will take you several months to learn the skills necessary for pvp. mission running would be a good start. although the very first thing you need to do is improve your learning skills. personally i dont recommend mining.. its ok for alts, but for a main.. its way boring.. be sure to use the eve survival guide... for missions. some of them can be deceptively difficult. the best paying ones, in terms of cash, bounties, loot and salvage, are of course those given out by command, internal security, security agents. finding one with the highest positive quality is best. eventually though, you'll be able to get into pvp, which is a whole different ballgame.. a ship that can run missions quite well, will often not survive a pvp encounter.. the fits are totally different.. and when you've got a recon ship webbing and warp scrambling you, and your sensors are jammed.. or worse, things can get very very bad very quickly, which is what pvp is.. fast.. and deadly. ... and a lot of fun. losing a fight in eve has very real consequences, unlike other less cerebral games like wow or 'insert generic elf bashing game name here' etc ;)
once you've been doing missions for a while.. and i'd recommend at least being able to do level 3 missions, then try joining your racial types militia.. its a good introduction to pvp.. though by now hopefully your in a corp that has experienced members in it that can help you out with mission and pvp fit ideas/help.. beware noob corps, if the corps ceo is only a few weeks old, your either cannon fodder, or its a front for an isk farming operation... the one is gungho and the other has oddly silent members ;D
so dont just join any corp.. do a little research and make sure they can help you too. though dont be too surprised if a mission running/pvp corp has a high tax rate.. up to 25 percent is not unusual... theres a lot more to it than this. and i've probably glossed over quite a few things, but despite that.... its all fun.. really :D
