I Miss DOS...Follow

They don't make games like they used to.

Seriously, what ever happened to all the old 3D flight sims that were mission based and would cause certain parts of your craft to stop working if you were hit in specific areas?

My favorite among those were the old X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter games. Even though graphics have gotten better, gameplay in newer games such as Rogue Squadron just don't feel as solid.

I miss taking off and landing on carriers, giving commands to wingmen and setting my deflector shields in combat. I miss being equally vulnerable as all the CPU crafts, and not being a one-man army like in all the games today.

It seems ironic somehow that I can no longer play these games because my computer is too new to run them. I've tried DOS emulators, but none of them work correctly.

I dream of a day a collection of DOS classics is released for Windows. Games like the original Warcraft, Commander Keen, Airbourne Ranger...

I agree! i loved the tie fighter/XWing series and played them all. Strafing Frigates and Star Destroyers was AWESOME!

Another great flight sim was Strike Commander.

I wasnt around when DOS was but I've always wanted to play older games like the original Elder Scrolls. Anyone know if theres a good working emulator for DOS?

Can't recall one offhand. Still, most of them are kind of hard to use.
But have no fear! Most games from the DOS age (that were popular at least) have "new" version made by fans, that comes with their own little emulator thingamabobs. I personally played zDoom and Ur-Quan Masters quite recently, both working fine on both Vista and XP.

Have you played through rogue squadron 2 while piloting a tie interceptor without improved shields? Or even on an A wing I guess. Anything without an r2 unit can die really easily.

The battle of endor in particular was one of the hardest moments that I can remember in modern games. The feeling after turning around at the start to look at the pretty stars, only to realize that the stars are actually all tie fighters is one of the more ****-your-pants moments in any game that I can remember.

I will say that I liked RS1 (on n64) better than 2 on the gcn, mostly because it had a lot of truly original and rich new worlds to explore, taking areas from the books and EU that didn't just rip off the movies. 2 follows the movies almost to the letter.

For the DOS emulator, the only one that comes to mind is DOSBox. Try to Google it.

I use it for plenty of games (I still love Dark Heart of Uukrul, and even have the wheel thingy that was the copy protection way back when)

Oh man, DOS, brings back so many wonderful memories. The X-Wing/Tie Fighter games were great, as were games like Doom and Wolfenstein. I had this cd full of shareware/freeware that occupied the majority of my DOS game-playing time. Anyone ever played Scorched Earth? The Adventures of Maddog Williams? Both great games. But I submit that nothing is better than the masterpiece that is Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, which I still consider one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. Man...I suddenly need to play that, NOW.

That is the exact game that I mean. There were two versions actually, one with voice acting, which came on CD-ROM (imagine that), and another with just the text speech, which came on a whopping 5 floppies. I of course had both, but preferred the CD-ROM title. The voice acting wasn't too terrible, considering Indy wasn't voiced by Harrison Ford.

I remember trying to get Kali to work with DOS and a 14.4 modem so that I could play Warcraft 1 and 2 over a simulated IPX/SPX network. Ah those were the days. DOS hung hard though when things went wrong.

There really should be a way to emulate and play that old stuff though.

DOSbox, which was mentioned earlier, seems to be the common emulator on the TES boards.

Many games will never be remade for various reasons. TES II: Daggerfall for example is gone for good unless you can get your hands on an old disc because the source code went missing. Bethesda has stated multiple times the game or remake of any kind will never be released. The used TES II disc usually goes for $50+. Including the hologram box is usually $100+.

Scorched Earth actually runs on Vista if you set the compatibility to XP. Might take a little playing around with but I have had it up and running on my Vista machine without an emulator. Also you can grab Scorched Earth 3D if the original doesn't work for you.

Kuwoobie I was just curious if that girl in your avatar pic was the red haired chick from Bleach with the magic hairpin?

X-wing vs TIE Fighter didn't require DOS. Now Rebel Assault... THAT was a DOS game.
