I thought at first doing random dungeons would help me level well, and then I saw the exp drop to a level where it would take 10 randoms to gain a level. Not to mention that the groups I got were always fighting with each other. Then I tried the BG's and saw that every BG I did I would gain a level. Would it be plausible to level up to 55 on random BG's? I just hit 53 this morning. Any other leveling tips would be great, thank you.

Yes.

However I was under the impression it wasn't a speedy option. Did the buff the XP gain or anything like that?

unless they were really sneaky about doing so, no. The have nerfed the EXP twice from what I've been told in BGs.

As for other option: you are very close to going to Outlands, so where to quest is more tied to what side you play on, but if you are 56 still I would suggest Bad Lands, because when you hit 58 you can use the Portal right there in the zone to move on.
Once through, quest for exp but queue for instances but not randoms. Only run the instance one/twice to do the quests for the area. Do this all the way to 85 (I've yet to take one of my characters past 85 yet, but I'd assume you need to quest more 85-90).

When MoP first came out, AV (and maybe other BGs?) was giving INSANE experience. To the tune of 1 million for a win (at 85), 500k for a loss. Last I heard it was nerfed down within a week to 400k/200k.

I'm currently leveling through Cata at the moment. I noticed the game suddenly became picky about item levels, it wanted 220 and I had like 180 on average. I think it's kind of silly because all the instances so far has been a pushover, as soon as the difficulty is ramped up a bit they're suddenly demanding standards. Fun fact is that I didn't find any two handed weapons from quests I could equip from 80-81 so I did my very first heroic with one handed and shield as a DPS, and the one handed did 200 more damage than the last two handed which came from one of the last non heroic wotlk instances. Will the item levels jump with 100 item levels again once I enter Pandaria?

It's because the jump from Wrath regular dungeons to Cataclysm regular dungeons is like two raid tiers worth of stats. If you waltz into Throne of Tides in green Wrath gear, you'll get roflstomped into mush. Maybe not as a damage dealer, but as a tank or healer, it would be one ugly run. You said it yourself when you mentioned that a one-handed weapon from Cataclysm content did more damage than a two-handed weapon from Wrath content. Now apply that difference to all your stats and imagine what would happen in there.

The item level requirements are there to prevent undergeared players from ruining the experience for the rest of the PUG.
