Well I had a busy weekend. Got up to 35. Played in a few more dungeons. Why is it if I say "I've never done this dungeon before?" that no one even the person marked "dungeon guide" steps up and leads us through the dungeon? I ran into this multiple times. There cannot be this many new players or am I just imagining? I assume at this stage of WOW that people like me, completely new, are rare. But maybe I'm wrong.

After searching the AH and grimacing at the prices. I got the ability to have runes back at 25, only could afford 1 which was probably a mistake ( the Consecration rune) I decided to play with crafting. OMG this is so insanely easy. In 6 years of FFXI, I only got to 97.6 out of 100 Cooking. In 2 days, I'm now 216 Skinning and Leathercraft in the 60's. No breaks, no lousy one 0.1 skill up out of two-4 dozen synths. This is too easy. And selling a stack of leather for 25 gold will help with filling out my other 2 rune slots soon.

So I was questing out in . . . forget the name. I was having to kill Witch Doctors for some drop and all of the sudden I was attacked. There was this annoying laughing and once I managed to get a target it appeared to be some elf attacking me. I thought I was set not to be PVP but guess that doesn't apply out in the world. Anyway. The rogue came in, dropped me to very low heath. So I hit one of my cures, then popped Judgement, Consecretation, and pretty much the full range of DD abilities. The idiot started to run off and I caught him with the Stun move at the last second, then killed him.
So it was done, then he came back a minute or 2 later and attacked again. This time he did kill my wife's character (mage) in 2-3 hits. But I caught him with the stun and unloaded all the DD abilities and killed him again. This kind of ruined our fun, so after raising my wife, we rode out of there.

Is this normal?

Most of the time you tend to have to wing it unless it is a higher level dungeon (the kind of fights where you die if you miss something). Mention it at the beginning of the instance though so if someone is complaining about how you are pulling or for some reason taking damage that is avoidable then you can inform them that you said you were new.

Crafting is easy no doubt about that. Best thing you can do is join a guild if you want cheep glyphs. I am sure most guilds will at least give you a discount on them (or even free depending on the glyph).

Depends on a couple factors. Are you on a PvP server? Did you attack an NPC that had the horde symbol next to their picture? Did you or your wife buff someone that was flagged (Alliance symbol next to their picture)? If any of those are yes then you run the risk of getting attacked like you did. Worse off if it's on a PvP server you will encounter more and more of that kind of behavior the more you level. If PvP is not your thing you could always move to a PvE server.

Not talking has become more of a symptom since the dungeon finder was introduced. Many people will just silently pray you don't kill them. If you're the tank they may not want to risk offending you as they've been waiting in the queue for a half hour, and don't want to do that again. 'New Player' servers have more new people, but you aren't likely to meet them in the finder. If you were a DPS (DD) class and said you'd 'never been there before' you'd risk a vote-kick.

Crafting is pretty easy in WoW. There are points where it's more expensive, but as long as you have a supply of gold you won't have a problem leveling the profession. People 'power-level' professions from 0 to 525 in a day.

If you're on a PvP server people can harass you relentlessly. If you're on a PvE server remember that you'll be flagged for PvP after leaving a battleground, or if you have combat with a PvP-flagged NPC. Also there are some places that are always PvP even on a PvE server. Entering one of these even briefly will flag you for 5 minutes.

Unfortunately people just aren't that talkative in groups. People would much rather just get dungeons over with as soon as possible, leaving any new people to just trail along and hope it all works out. It usually does, but still...

If you're on a PVP server, then yes, it's normal. It's what you signed up for when choosing a PVP server. You're automatically flagged for PVP any time you're not in a major city or a starter zone.

If you're on a PVE server you just need to not let yourself get flagged. Don't engage in PVP or kill other faction NPCs and stuff like that.

As mentioned above, there are things that will flag you for PVP even if you aren't on a PVP server. If set options to display your name, you will see your name turn to green if you're PVP flagged.

If you wound up on a PVP server and didn't know what you were getting into, go ahead and restart on a 'normal' server. It won't take you long to level up and you'll have the chance to change your mind about some of the choices you made when you were less familiar with the game.

Flee! LW will give you the ability to make various armor kits and it eventually gives you some decent enhancements through embossing. For all of that, it will suck up a tremendous amount of mats, particularly as you grind from roughly 200 to 300. You're only 50 points in. Drop it and pick up another gathering skill so that you have extra money.

Not to mention you're a paladin and your wife is a mage and neither of you can really use any of the items leatherworking will make.

Your best bet will be for one of you to have skinning and either herbalism or mining and for the other one to have tailoring and either herbalism or mining, whichever the first does not have.

This way you will have all of the gathering professions covered and you will have the one crafting profession that does not require a gathering profession to feed it. Tailoring will also be able to supply you both with bags, which are the most important items you can get.

You will also make lots of money from selling your leather, herbs, and ores on the AH.

Hmm I'm on Doomhammer a PVE server so we must have done something to enable us to get attacked, oh well live and learn I guess.

I joined a guild and it seems to be a basic new person guild or the remains of an old guild. Only level 4 and looking at the list 1 officer has not even logged on in a month. No events/raids scheduled. Guess I'll see how it goes. Already seen 10-15 people join and 5-6 leave in the few days I've been in it.

RE crafting. between my wife and I in FFXI we had 6 crafting mules in the 90-100 range. In FFXI you could only take 1 craft above 60 to get to the cap of 100. We'll probably create a few more characters once we get involved a bit more.

If I create a Horde Character on the same server can I mail stuff back and forth from an Alliance character? I assume not
also are the Auction houses linked? and if so how?

Auction houses within the same faction are linked. For example, if you post in Stormwind, your auction could be seen and purchased by a player in any other Alliance city/AH location ... but it would not appear on the Horde or Neutral AH.

You cannot directly mail things from one faction to the other. It is possible to wash transactions through the Neutral AH, but you will need someone with a different account because you cannot bid on your own auctions (or at least that is the way it used to be). Example -- you and your wife create Horde alts. Presuming your wife is on a different account (as it sounds like she is) you post on the Neutral AH, using your Alliance toon. She is waiting on her Horde toon and buys out your auction. Then, since she is Horde, she can mail it to your Horde alt.

The only downside is how much of the winnings the neutral AH takes out of things you buy on it. It is around 15%. The bright side is you have your wife to do those transactions with so you don't have to find someone to help trade something very valuable and find out they are a scum bag and rip you off. Just a word of advice, if you plan to post something valuable for little to nothing (like 1s) be communicating when it is being posted and be at the AH ready to buy it as soon as it is posted. I have heard horror stories of people sniping sells like that because people weren't quick enough.

The neutral AH are in Booty Bay, Ratchet, and Gadgetzan. Unsure if there is one all the way up in Winterspring or not...

Also: Skinning + Mining & Herbalism + Inscription.

When you want to raise other professions you'll have to get the characters to at least lvl75 to cap the skills.

Thanks for the comments. I may drop leather, I assume its more useful to druids and rogues since they seem to wear the leather armors. I may have missed a class(es) though. If I have skinning without leather then I can sell the skins/hides/leather without guilt or my packrat nature telling me to save it for leveling leather.

Guess I should ask, looking toward endgame and all this tier 13 ( still not understanding the Tier label) gear. Is this gear going to be crafted, bought with some sort of points or drops? I'm not wanting to look at endgame stuff in detail atm. Enjoying the old thrill of just wandering around, exploring and questing. I see the allure of fast leveling, just get to 15 and then use dungeon finder to get levels fast.

Is there any advantage to exploring questing? vs the dungeons? I did several dungeons and won a decent amount of blue gear which is far supperior to all the green rewards I've gotten from questing. I have been able to get 2 of the cheap faction bags and just need ~5-600 more fame to get the Gnome 16 bag item for having high enough fame/reputation.
#14 Oct 13 2011 at 12:34 PM Rating: Good
Tier gear (used to refer to class-specific sets with particular set bonuses) comes generally from raiding. The Dragon Soul's T13 (so-called because there have been "twelve" previous tiers of raiding since Vanilla) will come fully from the raid dungeon, but parts of the previous tiers (11 and 12 have been this expansion) are available for Justice Points or Valor Points. Those are earned through heroic 5-man dungeons or raids.
#15 Oct 13 2011 at 12:35 PM Rating: Good
The "label" as it were, is based on the number of the raid. The very first raid was Molten Core back before we had any expansions. Firelands (the current raid tier) is the 12th raid, so hence it is tier 12. Raid gear is usually a combination of all three depending on your class/spec. I don't know if this is true for everyone, but it seems that in most cases, the crafted boots are the best in slot boots for this tier. The actual tier gear (which is specific to your class/role and has set bonuses, making it stronger the more pieces you have equipped) is partially bought with points and partially earned through drops. The only piece you can only earn through points is the chest, where as the only pieces you can earn through drops are the shoulders and helm. Gloves and pants you can earn either through points or from drops in the pvp raid. For T13 however, it will be different. I'm not sure if they've said whether or not any tier pieces will be available in the pvp raid or not, but in general you will only be able to earn tier gear in the raid.

The advantage to leveling via questing, is that in most cases it is actually faster exp/hr. The exception to this, is when you go into a new dungeon for the first time and you complete the quests. Dungeon quests give an extraordinary amount of experience, so those quests make up for the slower exp/hr that a dungeon normally gives.

Crafting gear has seemed weird to me in WoW since my first hunter started as skinning/leatherworking, and I quickly became dismayed with my choice. Mostly because you can rarely make level-appropriate gear while leveling up. So you the stuff you make when you have access to light leather isn't as good as your current gear, and the stuff you'd actually want to wear takes medium leather to make; which you won't really have access to yet, so you buy it off the AH if you want it.

At end-game gear crafting professions will get recipes for low ilevel end-game BoE gear. Meaning it can make it easier for you to get started at end game if the prices for the gear on the Auction House are too high for your tastes, or you want to skip some of the entry-level dungeons, or haven't got enough reputation with the right factions, etc.

I like to alternate myself. I'll PvP or run dungeons for a bit to gear up, then go questing until the quest rewards are comparable with what I'm wearing again. My pally did a lot of dungeons in the late 40s and early 50s and didn't replace anything until Outland. My shaman got a bunch of PvP gear in the late 20s that lasted until I upgraded to Mail at 40, and my wife had her level 70 PvP set last through all of Northrend on her Druid, etc. I never timed it out or anything, but better gear does help stuff die faster while questing. Smiley: smile

Edit: How many times can I say 'gear' in one sentence? Smiley: lol

Also tiers are like mini-expansions. Each one adds new content with better gear. So you'll be replacing all your equipment every few months.

Hunters and shamans as well since LW crafts mails pieces also.

Though, to be fair and build a bit upon what Protein said above, having played for quite a while now and having a bunch of max-level characters and nearly all the professions maxed out, I find that matching specific professions with the type of armor that toon wears isn't very necessary at all. My LW shammy is wearing nothing she's made, my BS pally isn't either. As Protein said, it rarely lines up such that you can actually make strong gear for yourself at the time you need it with much efficiency. And at end-game, while it can be a handy gap-filler until you get "good" stuff, unless you luck/work into raid-drop-level special patterns, you probably won't be wearing your own crafted gear for very long, if at all.

Short version, if you like LW, keep it and make cash off of legplates or selling gear to others at endgame.

Yeah, if you are efficient about questing it is generally faster, especially if combined with either mining/herbing and archaeology (just grabbing what you run across.) Although if you are a tank or healer I think spamming dungeons might compete simply because you never have to stop pulling xp or move from town. "Enter dungeon" kill-kill-kill, etc.

Most people, I think, switch things up just out of boredom regardless of pure speed. It is supposed to be fun after all. If you want to see the world, go for it. But yes, the dungeon drop gear is way better and at least 1 run of each dungeon at level is probably good so you a) see it, b) get a ton of quest xp, and c) might get a piece or 2 of really solid gear.

Another thing to keep in mind is that both crafting and gathering have associated bonuses. Skinning increases your crit, LW lets you use "embossing" to enhance your gear with some nice bonuses. Leatherworking isn't necessarily useless (although it may not be optimal for min/maxing) but it may be easier to level later on, when farming stack after stack of leather is less of a grind.

As mentioned above, try a bit of everything. You can even get XP through battlegrounds.

You might want to head over to Wowhead and do a bit of research before moving into a new zone. Long quest chains often culminate in a decent blue item. I was, for example, pleasantly surprised to get a couple of decent trinkets from the post Cataclysm Badlands. Check out their information on instances too; several dungeons have nice quest rewards for killing the final boss.

CAVEAT: Your game experience will change when you hit Outland (58-60). You'll be hitting the oldest material in the game and it is somewhat less friendly for leveling. You'll level quickly, but it is a bit harder to get good gear outside of instances. Be sure to hit Wowhead so that you can pick the quests that are most useful to you; TBC questing was less linear and with the accelerated leveling it helps to plan a bit in advance.

Don't worry too much about getting the best possible gear in Outland though. At 68, switch to Northrend. Unless you had good luck with Outland instances and raids, you'll replace much of your gear in the first few quests.

I remember a couple quests in Borean Tundra gives a bow that is the eqivalent of this which drops off the final boss of the first raid in BC, kara was the name.

Anywho... just pick whatever you like. Each profession gives different bonuses at higher levels. Here is where you can go to get the various profession information. Also if at some time you decide that you hate x profession you can always pick up y and level it rather quickly. :P

I also have done this and had the same outcome. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get into a great guild and we do a lot of runs together, which I prefer over PUG runs. There are plenty of new players out there but I just figure that when it comes to situations such as these, people are either in a hurry, can't be bothered to help, or don't know enough to help out. Every now and then, however, you'll come across some really great people who are more than happy to help out.

I'd consider those to be more "hard dungeons" than actual raids. And I'm pretty sure they were 25 mans, not 15. It has been a long time though, so my memory might be rusty.

Actually, Scholo and Lower Blackrock Spire were both originally 10, according to WoWPedia. UBRS was 15.

they were 'hard dungeons' after they were nerfed. ubrs and lbrs are the same instance so they can't have different limits on party size.
