Gear Level?Follow

Time for one of my dumb questions. I keep running into the term gear level followed by a number. Most recently, to run Burning Crusade Heroic Dungeons, I need a gear level of 329.

How do you figure that out? There are numerous references in the wiki, but none that specific. The other night, running Utgarde Keep, one player asked me how I got to that level without better gear.

For example, I can tell you that my level is 71 (hunter), my armor is 5 blue and 4 green with a total value of 4249, my various trinkets are 3 blue, two green, and that my two primary weapons are both green. each dealing over 110 base DPS. But what the heck does that mean about gear level?

When you're on "C" or character screen your iLevel is shown near the top of that display when you're on the correct of the 3 options there, which are what equipment manager, stats and... something.
It appears to take the i(tem)Level of each piece you have and... average? them. Not quite sure I just know that my paladin is still 6 points short of queuing for random troll dungeons.

Yup. It averages out the highest ilvl for each slot that you can equip. So, say for example you have a weapon with an ilvl of 325 equipped. But you have a weapon in your bag that is ilvl 346, just waiting for you to hit 85. Before you hit 85, that weapon will not count towards your ilvl. Once you turn 85 and can equip it however, your ilvl will jump up, regardless of whether you actually equip it or not.

To add to this, you have to be careful of gear in your bags that you can technically wear but isn't statted for your class/spec skewing your ilvl on your character pane. If you're curious as to the ilvl of what you're wearing, you can check that on the official site. As an example, here's a random* warrior whose character pane shows something different than what he's actually wearing, as far as ilvl, due to carrying around a piece of healing plate he got out of a quest that he keeps forgetting to vendor.

It's also a good way to check how a particular gear set stacks up, if you're running a class that can perform multiple roles.

*By random, of course, I mean it's the crappy warrior I'm leveling with some friends.

The iLvl system for dungeons is very cheatable especially as PvP is of higher iLvl.

Even Blizz knows as in Poldy's example if you check armory you get equiped versus max. They really need to add that feature in game.

If you post a link to Armory, someone might be able to give you advice on gear. Just knowing the color won't tell us much.
