Even though being a **** is what Raw does best, oddly enough he is right. From Wowpedia: "WotLK Patch 3.0.2 (2008-10-14): New Profession: Inscription is available to train up to 375. It is available for those who have Burning Crusade."

I was under the assumption that it required Wrath as well, since that's when it was released. The same page says you need Wrath to train Grand Master and Cataclysm to train Illustrious Grand Master though.

Personally as the new player here. I asked just because in my experience new expansions are ~100% aimed at endgame players. Not lowly starting players. I remember the Death Knight being greyed out when I created my character.

But anyway

Thanks for all the feedback. I hit 15 Pld and wife hit 19 Mage (d@mn evening college classes) We did hit a snag where the quest givers are not giving me the same quests because my level is too low. I guess I'll just have to find a way to xp up 4 levels to catch her.

RE: Guilds. I've been /invited out of the blue to 3-4 now, but havn't accepted anything yet. I honestly havn't looked into the advantages of guilds yet. Mainly because I ran an endgame Linkshell(guild) in FFXI for 4 years. I don't want to go back to scheduled events, deal with emo members, deal with loot hogs, drama, etc.

RE: professions I found a trainer for mining since I see the mining points out in the wilds fairly often I'm going to casually do that while exploring/leveling. I'm wondering in the long term I've seen for Pld at least its mentioned using high level self crafted ?gems? to augment some the gear into better items. Or is it better to look at blacksmithing to be able to make the plate armor in the first place?

RE prices - Found the AH. Looked at my amazing wallet with 39 silver in it and the fact that I couldn't find any equipment ( was mainly looking for new weapon ) for less than 1 gold and most going for multiple gold. I'm guessing WOW or at least on the Doomhammer server inflation is king and the paltry 1-6 silvers I get for some of the more recent quests have just been depreciated into joke rewards ( I <3 the 1000 experience point rewards though) I guess I'll just keep going and hope to find better stuff than I have gotten through quests.

Dueling - Why in the world would a level ~15 peson challenge me at level 5 to a duel. I stuppidly accepted and died in 1 hit. Is this just griefing or someone stupid or something else?

Guilds are worth it. They are dime a dozen and if you don't like it you can always /gquit and move on to the next. I haven't (or won't) played FFXI so I don't know how guilds are but in WoW you can generally come and go as you please while leveling. Scheduled events don't really start taking into effect until you are trying to run raids at max level.

-shrug- I would go with Jewel crafting myself. Not only would you be able to cut your own gems but you can also provide gems to the miss's. Depending on what professions she picked up she might be able to return the favor. Like enchanting your purple headed staff with potency. Smiley: wink2

I would certainly avoid the AH like the plague until you got a bit of change stockpiled. At level 20 you can train for your first mount for 2-3g (can't remember due to getting too old Smiley: glare).

Simply put, they are stupid. There is an interface option to disable random duels, along with guild invites, but you would have to comb the options to find it. There is no way I could possibly remember.

The dueling happens and annoys me to no end, I really wish there was an option to auto-decline all duels (according the the last poster there IS an interface option for duels so I'm off my laptop to go looking for this interface option) The only interface options I found blocked trade and guild invites ... I'm on a PVE server because I want to play against the machine, not get randomly jumped or harassed. Doesn't help that world events are set up to take place in duel areas... or is it that duels started happening there because of the traffic for world events? I had 4 or 5 random duels offered up to my various characters while doing the brewfest world event this past week just because I dared set foot outside the gates of stormwind or something :)

You have good timing WRT expansions. Cataclysm is the first one that paid more than lip service to 1-60 leveling. The DK is not exactly an example of this because it was intended to be a "Hero" class, kind of outside the normal framework.

Keep going on quests that are still orange/yellow/green to you. They'll be yellow/green/grey for her, and you'll catch up in good time without spending a few hours grinding - hmm, level 15-17, murlocs in Redridge?

If you're thinking about endgame, all the crafting professions are /roughly/ equivalent in benefit. Some, like BS, might be more expensive to level but mean that you aren't beholden to anyone else for crafted gear - it's a tradeoff. But you won't be hamstrung regardless of what you choose.

Better stuff is indeed on the way. At level 15, if they even give green quest rewards at all, it's a recent development. Gear with stats is "supposed" to be relatively rare at that point, and accelerate - your first green shoulder or helmet is a milestone.

As for silver, yeah, quest rewards just pay for necessities - repair, training, maybe some vendor food/drink... Stuff you gather (cloth, skins, ore, herbs) and stuff you find (bind-on-equip gear, raw meat/fish, etc.) is where the bank balance comes from. On a mature server, decent low-level gear tends to be way overpriced for a number of reasons: people at the level cap (where you can earn 400g/day through questing alone) bankrolling new alts; PvPers twinking for low-level battlegrounds; enchanters looking for bargains to disenchant into component dust/shards. Thus the recommendation to avoid it for now - it's hard for you to get money in the first place, and what you do find is overpriced compared to how long you can use it - there's just not enough bang per buck.

For quests and items I have found wowhead to be extremely helpful. And if you want a site that does good character break downs, I would recommend noxxic.com. It does a good job of setting out what are good rotations, gear and gear buffs, talent tree specs etc...

You've probably already figured this out, but don't buy any gear off the Auction House. This was always true, but especially so since the leveling experience was completely revamped in the most recent expansion:

With respect for your greater experience, I don't necessarily agree with that statement, especially for Hunters. For as hunter, your weapons, especially your ranged weapon, are everything. I don't buy armor or such at the AH, but I often buy my primary weapons there - the best I can afford and use at my level. Damage-wise, I often find these to be much more powerful than the weapons dropped by mobs at the same level. The more pain I can hand out on the first strike and closing, the less I'm likely to have to endure if the Mob closes.

Leveling, you can always do a couple quick BGs every ten levels and grab the nice WSG bows that will fairly easily hold you over til the next one. Once you get to Outland, the quests will give you fairly awesome stuff.

Proper kiting will prevent you from having to endure anything on many solo mob encounters. And, of course, don't forget proper pet control.

Pretty much what Poldaran said. If you are finding yourself with a mob in your face either you are fighting things that are too high/difficult or you need to re-assess how you are playing your class. I leveled two hunters and only once had I felt the need to buy a new range weapon for that character. (was waay back in early BC and I haven't gotten a weapon upgrade in over 10 levels, which is unheard of now that they actually improved the leveling experience)

I'm a bit late to the party, since I pretty much totally agree with the last two.

I also levelled my hunter in the BC era - when elites, linked mobs, and groups carefully positioned to be picked up by runners were common as opposed to nonexistent, when quest reward selections were like an ingredient basket from "Chopped", and the talent trees had been neither streamlined nor normalized.

And even then, I'd say that the only class that could make the weapon damage argument were DPS warriors. Hunters have kiting tools they don't, a pet they don't, and an aggro dump they don't. Even more, it's important that hunters learn how to use those tools, so being somewhat underpowered in raw damage terms isn't a bug, it's a feature.

Don't worry too much about gear, you can level without armour at all (though it's rather slow) and by questing with your wife you should be able to kill most things very easily, if you are struggling you might want to think about pulling less mobs at once or if there's anything you can do to take less damage (mages get counterspell early on which you can use to interrupt spell casts, you should have a stun ability, etc) rather than spending gold upgrading items. You will level fast enough that you'll outgrow any items you buy rather quickly.

Once you start selling things on the AH you should see your gold situation become much healthier (my alts are usually able to sell stacks of copper ore for 5g or more, so you can make quite a lot of gold from the stuff you gather at early levels).

I would recommend making an AH alt, you can either level it out of the starter zone or just make a mad dash for the capital city at level 1 (you might die if you aggro a mob though). You can then post items that you think might sell to this character (a long with some silver to pay for listing fees), this means that on your leveling character you just need to post items to your alt to clear them out of your bags, rather than having them taking up bag space until you get back to a capital city (or making unnecessary journeys to sell them).

Bags are one of the best investments you can make at lower levels as the more things you can carry the more you can sell later. If you are feeling brave enough to try the LFD tool you can buy tabards for each race (e.g. Stormwind for alliance, Undercity for horde) which lets you collect reputation if you wear it when running dungeons. At revered reputation (you get rep for questing too, so keep an eye out for that as well) you can buy a 16 slot bag, so if you can get revered with several races this will save you a nice bit of gold. Personally I wouldn't bother buying anything smaller than 14 slots and when looking at prices of 16 slot bags keep in mind that some are bind on equip (so you won't be able to sell them later) while others do not bind (so you can sell them when you get larger bags or pass them on to an alt).

Originally, back in "Vanilla". leveling a character to max level was somewhat challenging. Now it is totally simple. The levels go very fast and (usually) the only way to die is to pull way too many monsters at once. You don't need a guild to level. If you decide to do an instance (dungeon) there is a "looking for group" button that will find you a group of players and then teleport you to the instance. There's one for battlegrounds, too, if you feel like fighting other players in groups. The battlegrounds give a little bit of experience and points that will let you buy gear. Two "gathering" professions is the normal advice for a brand-new player. Gather up minerals or leather or herbs and sell them all on the AH. You don't really ever need to buy gear on the AH just for leveling. Quest rewards and drops are good enough. Leveling is so easy now that you could do it naked with a dagger if you were careful. Personally, I will eventually replace waaaay outdated gear with something CHEAP from the AH every once in a while, but ti's not really necessary. There is nothing to worry about. Low-level stuff and leveling in general is so incredibly simple that you don't need much of a strategy. The quests now show you where to go on your map, so you don't really need a website to look them up or anything.

WoW can still be challenging if you participate in "end game" stuff: raids (10 or 25 person dungeons), arena (fighting other players in teams of 2 or 3 or 5), or "rated battlegrounds" (pre-assembled regular teams).

Other than the end game stuff everything is EXTREMELY easy once you get the hang of it even just a little bit. You've got nothing to worrry about. Just enjoy it.

You left off the difficulty in not stabbing severe clam stackers when running random dungeons.

Maybe that's just me, though.

Thanks again for the advice.

We have quested together up to 25 as of last night.

Since I don't have class on Fridays and my better half works on Fridays. I spent today getting up to 30. I'm heading to the local game store to play some Warhammer 40,000 and she will spend the evening catching up/surpassing me.

But anyway. I did use the AH to get my weapon upgraded. Since all our questing and me selling some stacks of cloth, silver bars, couple of pearls I found in clams. I actually had a bit of gold to my name now.

I got to experience the /random dungeon finder today and wow its awesome for a tank at least. Until I discovered tanks are supposed to pull? Once I typed out "1st time here.""Never done this before" it got through my party members heads that I had no clue where to go. The party started to move and I got in 3 wins :) got some achievements and some nice blue lettered items. Only bad thing is I somehow dropped party and got kicked out of the Gnome dungeon before choosing my reward from the NPC behind the column after the last boss. :(

I must say this is a nice system (at least for me as a tank) I never had to wait more than 1-3 minutes.

Now questions

One of the trainers mentioned dual specting for 10 gold. :( think I'm at 15 gold atm. And if I under stand this right I use this to basically choose a 2nd talent path. I'm protection paladin atm. So I could choose Retribution and have a DPS pld that only takes a few seconds to change between (assuming not in combat/dungeons/raids/etc)

And you can use it in dungeons/raids but just not while in combat. It's one of my favourite things they added to the game, especially after it was reduced from 1000g.

Can you use it in BGs now?

I want to say you used to not be able to. Having found myself in one with no healers a while back, and being dismayed as I was unable to change spec. But as far as I know I could have been 'in combat' at the time, as it was part way through one. I don't remember checking, and my memory isn't that great anyway.

I haven't done a bg in well over a year, so I am not sure. But the last time I was in one I tried switching specs and couldn't either, even when I was definitely not in combat.

I'm pretty sure you have to switch specs BEFORE the bg starts. I sure wish they had triple spec!
