In the event that a guild leader takes a leave of absence and remains inactive for an extended period of time, it can be difficult for some guilds to carry on as normal. To help assist with these situations, we're introducing a new system in patch 4.3 known as "inactive guild leader replacement" that will allow players of the appropriate rank to take over leadership of a guild from an inactive guild leader via the Guild tab.

The way inactive guild leader replacement works is pretty straightforward. If a guild leader’s character is inactive for 30 days, a notification will appear in the Guild News & Events feed which can only be seen by guild members who are eligible to become the new guild leader. To determine eligibility, the game will look for the highest ranked character in the guild that's logged on in the past week, and any guild member from that rank will be able to request guild leadership simply by clicking on the notification.

As with many actions in World of Warcraft, clicking on the notification will open up a confirmation window which, once accepted, will transition leadership from the inactive guild leader to the first player to request leadership. If guild leadership is changed, the old guild leader will be notified via email to his or her registered Battle.net address. While some players may need to log out and back in before their Guild tab will visually update, the change in leadership will be immediate, with all ranks and permissions remaining in-tact.

Please note that if you're an active leader of a guild, this system should not affect you or your guild. The goal of inactive guild leader replacement is simply to allow guilds which have found themselves without leadership for a long period of time to resolve the situation on their own without the need to contact our In-Game Support department.

Inactive guild leader replacement is currently live on the PTR, but keep in mind that it may be difficult to test, as a guild leader will need to be inactive for a full 30 days before the option to transition leadership will become available.

This is just an automation of their current "absent Guild Master" policy. Currently, you have to open a ticket, but you get the same results. There are two semi-related things I would change about the system. I think there should be a 7-day window between when the first eligible player opts to take over the guild, and when any change in leadership actually takes place. This gives other interested players a chance to consider if they would also like to become GM, and the guild as a whole can vote for who they would like to be GM, or if they would like to keep the old GM. This also gives the previous GM the opportunity to log back in and maintain his/her position, if he wins the election.

One vote per account, so it doesn't matter how many alts you have in the guild.

Results are hidden and individual votes can be changed up to the end of the 7-day window.

Or, you know, you just let players figure that out on their own.
Sure it'll be abused/go wrong a bunch of times but that's going to happen no matter what you do.

Overall I think this is a good solution to a small problem in WoW.

I think it's a good idea, but should be account bound. If I was to play an in-guild alt for 30 days, but not my GM toon, my leadership should not be taken. My alts are all Officers in the guild and capable of normal guild management. It wouldn't really happen to me, but I do see it as an issue.

30 days doesn't really seem like long enough, so I think they should extend that a bit (maybe 2 months instead). Also I think some sort of member vote would be a good idea (active members and time limited), sometimes guilds have different factions in them pushing for different focuses or that one person who's a bit of a pain but is an officer because they do something else really well. The 'first come first promoted' approach seems as though it could lead to some issues if the person who takes leadership has different goals from the majority of the guild.

I guess it doesn't happen that often though, I've only been in guilds with that situation twice and one of them was an alt guild that no one used anyway (and the Blizzard rep promoted someone else who'd been inactive for months to guild leader before finally passing it to me).

I would propose a vote system that only allowed the officers to vote for the new leader among a pool of officers, but not allow them to vote for themselves.

30 days seems a bit short. I agree, account bound. I know there are times where I probably get close to 30 days inactive on my guild leader character. My other "alts" in the guild all have full control so when I don't feel like playing my "main" I don't have to. If those goes through as is, I'm going to be paranoid and login every day on my guild leader toon. :-\

Is a good idea. My old guild has been 'without' a guild leader person since I last logged into my Warlock.

That was like 3 months ago.

Makes me determined to double-check ranks in my private guild, make sure that the friends who have access can't overthrow the leader when I'm not on that character for a while. Least a couple of them I'm the sole member so no mutiny even possible.

Take note the guild I'm in. Max level yet the guild leader and all its officers transferred their mains over to another server but left the guild intact. Now we have a guild who is max level with tons of stuff and gold in the bank and NO ONE can recruit, access the bank, or post guild info to organize a raid. If it was ACCOUNT 30 days then we would never be able to unlock the guild and actually do anything. And if the old guild leader would reply to our in game messages on the other server maybe we could get something done... I'm all for this replacement model they have ready for us. Just not too happy about having to wait 30 days when 3 weeks should be more then enough.

If you can't log into your main in a 30 day window then you're not a good guild leader.

30 days is fine. If your guild leader is still playing, but on other characters, one has to assume the officers of appropriate rank are able to contact him about transferring leadership.

Two months would be way too long for most guilds to survive.
