Sorry guys if this is a bit different to what's generally discussed here
I sold an unopened (still with packaging) WoW Catac on eBay, the buyer messaged me earlier saying the code didn't work & if I had any suggestions to why.
Could you guys suggest some things please? The first thing that came to mind was that the buyer is missing one of the prior expansions.
Worst case scenario would be the that the key / code is a duplicate / faulty etc but I've heard this is rare & especially when the box is unopened and still has its original plastic packaging.

If the box was unopened and still sealed, I would have him contact Blizzard customer support. There's no reason the code shouldn't work if he has all the previous expansions.
Not to be cynical, but he could also be lying in hopes of getting a refund.
If you only sold cata and he didn't have a vanilla+tbc+wrath enabled account then it would not work until he got those as well.
