Sitting or gaming? I've done 12-hour gaming sessions before. Like today. Longest time sitting down is probably eight hours. Usually I get up every couple of hours for a smoke, or food, or bio breaks.

Sounds about right. I think I did 12hrs a couple of times when I was younger. Still that involved breaks to do other things.

I don't think I could just sit there for 12hrs and game without going nuts.

How on earth did he play his XBOX for twelve hours straight without noticing or having regard for the symptoms of the blood clot that would lead to his death? It may be a tragedy, but it's one that should not have happened.

While you can have pain/swelling with a deep vein thrombosis, it's completely possible to have one without any symptoms.

What the article fails to mention was if there were any contributing medical conditions. While it says he sometimes played for up to twelve hours, it also doesn't mention if anyone knows how long he played that last time.

It appears that DVT is influenced by certain factors, some of which are hereditary.
Unfortunately, advice for reducing risk includes not only moving around and getting adequate hydration, but also avoiding alcohol and caffeine.

It makes better copy to write about a gamer, but the condition is originally associated with long haul flights. I'll worry about changing my gaming habits sometime after the airlines give us back enough room to move our legs.

Back in my teens I would play for 18 hours a day... occasionally I play for 10 or 12 hour stretches, but I usually take frequent breaks.

Made me think of an episode of 1000 Ways to Die.

This is why I can't do 3 hour raids anymore. 1-2 hours tops and I need to get up and move around. It always seemed instinctual but I guess there is a good reason for it. I can still put in some solid hours of gaming in a day don't get me wrong, I just like breaks where I do other things for a bit even if it's just for 20-30 mins before getting back into it.

One of the other risk factors is obesity, and while it's hard to be sure based on a headshot, Chris Staniforth looked like he was carrying a few extra pounds.

Long story short: sitting without moving for a long period of time is not a safe activity. If you're consuming caffeine and/or alcohol (seriously, how many gamers do you know who DON'T consume one or the other while playing) and are obese, it's just worse.

Take breaks when gaming, even if it's just getting up and walking around the room after a wipe. Do those silly calf and leg isometrics they show you on international flights. And stay hydrated.

If you take the hydration part seriously enough, the rest kinda works itself out(assuming you don't pee in a bottle).

So, its okay to get a 12hours flight (sometimes more) but its not okay to play something for 12 hours? What about work, when you have to do 2 shifts in a case of emergency? I had to work for 36 hours one time, and I work in front a PC, sat in a chair.

This guy did not died because he was playing a videogame. He died because he was stupid not to move for 12 hours. That`s what the news should be about. But I guess that wouldnt sell.

Playing video games for 12 hour straight doesn't seem to be the direct cause of his death. He was overweight, and he probably ate nothing but junk food and sat in a very poor posture throughout his 12-hour marathon. That combination alone could explain why he died.

It's sad to see someone die from something they love, but I guess he should've spread his marathon out or possibly called it off. But sometimes it's just too late. He will be missed I'm sure by the gaming community.

Flight crew tells you specifically to get up and move about, or at least stretch, on extended flights to avoid deep vein thrombosis.

So does the XBOX. And several games.
But its easier to hit gamers.

Ahhh, crap. :(

There goes my plan of producing "natural" "mt. dew" while gaming...
