It also takes away from the community's ability to police itself.
Not really, you can still set the thread filter to whatever you want, so it's easy to ignore sub-d posts. You just now need to read the thread to get an impression of it. You can also just use the mouseover, the ratings are visible in them.
Let me get this straight.
The devs didn't like that showing ratings could lead players to prejudge a thread.
So they removed ratings.
And that's not a problem, because it means that sub-d threads can be automatically ignored in the forum settings?
AKA, they are now able to universally judge sub-d threads.
That doesn't strike me as logical. At all.

Do threads really get up and down rated that much? I mean a lot of times they seem to stay pretty close to someone's karma default (system working as intended I guess). In which case you can still prejudge by the color-coded name attached to the thread.
This is why I think it's stupid. The threads that go sub-d are generally super inflammatory, shameless advertisements or (worst case scenario) phishing attempts. Showing ratings allows players to easily ignore them, which makes the forum experience nicer overall.
And I've seen PLENTY of threads go from default to decent, or good, so I don't think prejudging was an issue there. Likewise, I've seen good fall to default.
