I like that they added the mouseover previews of the threads. When the o-boards went to that format, I found myself trying to do the same on Alla and felt a bit stupid. Heh

Mouseover previews have been here for some time now. I had it enabled on the old forums. You could toggle it up next to the "Hide images" check-box.

Ha ha. The first thing I did was disable the mouseover preview (again.) I don't know why but mouseover popups annoy the crap out of me.

The mouseovers are annoying on the mobile site (m.zam.com) as they sometimes pop up when you tap a link, blocking the entire screen with a preview.

I find them handy for browsing through new thread replies.

Speaking of that. I have never been able to use m.zam.com. It won't let me log in.

I'm using an HP iPaq model 2790b with Windows Mobile 2003, if that helps.

You might have to try a different browser. Windows mobile 2003 was before windows mobile 5 or 6, and isn't supported. You might be able to make it work via loading opera.

to be honest that particular PDA is so old now, that you should really look at upgrading. You should be able to find a cheap dell axim x-51 that would be a massive upgrade in the $20-$30 range.

Are forum posts no longer rated? Or is the rating hidden by default? How am I going to be able to follow a sub-d'd thread?

The rating is at the top of the post, right beside the rating buttons.

Threads no longer show ratings. I believe this is to help try and facilitate more of a discussion in a thread rather than immediately go in and bash it for being sub-d/d.

So, no more sub-d threads. Will this make us a kinder community? I kinda doubt it.

They still have ratings, you just have to either open the thread or use the Mouseover.

Which is kinda stupid, considering the intent of the karma system is for us to patrol the forums ourselves.

If a thread is Sub-D, it's usually for a reason.

I want to know if a thread is default or lower with out a mouseover or w/e as they usually are awesome derail threads I want to get involved with.

Am I missing something? I see ratings on each reply, but no rating for the whole thread..

On the old layout the rating of the OP was visible from the thread index page.

I think it's a good change. Sure it stops you from prejudging threads, but then again it stops you from prejudging threads.

Yeah. Wasn't the whole point to be able to see which were the 'good' and 'bad' threads before you clicked on them?

Not really, you can still set the thread filter to whatever you want, so it's easy to ignore sub-d posts. You just now need to read the thread to get an impression of it. You can also just use the mouseover, the ratings are visible in them.

Well, it functioned as a way to see which threads were rated up or down sure, but that didn't always correlate. I know I've seen a lot of bandwaggoning that wasn't necessarily warranted. we'll see if that changes.

I think I misunderstood how it worked on the old forums. I thought that the thread had a rating, not the OP. I was under the impression that the poster and the thread kept separate ratings.

Do threads really get up and down rated that much? I mean a lot of times they seem to stay pretty close to someone's karma default (system working as intended I guess). In which case you can still prejudge by the color-coded name attached to the thread. Smiley: wink

Either way I'll probably end up reading everything anyway... Smiley: lol

Let me get this straight.

The devs didn't like that showing ratings could lead players to prejudge a thread.

So they removed ratings.

And that's not a problem, because it means that sub-d threads can be automatically ignored in the forum settings?

AKA, they are now able to universally judge sub-d threads.

That doesn't strike me as logical. At all.

[EDIT]

This is why I think it's stupid. The threads that go sub-d are generally super inflammatory, shameless advertisements or (worst case scenario) phishing attempts. Showing ratings allows players to easily ignore them, which makes the forum experience nicer overall.

And I've seen PLENTY of threads go from default to decent, or good, so I don't think prejudging was an issue there. Likewise, I've seen good fall to default.

Where? The dell axim x-51s I can find on eBay range from about $75 all the way to $400
