“Survey Approved 5/16/2011 ~ Administrator Kaolian”

This survey is for a writing class and it'll take about 1 minute :)

Every response helps a ton, and is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

I like the third option on the first question. Ultimate anonymity.

Anyway, quick survey. Smiley: thumbsup

People never use the word 'troll' right. Someone who shouts and insults people a lot isn't a troll, but is rather most likely a complete moron.

My definition as given in the survey: A person who purposefully uses logical fallacies to enrage other players for fun.

My reason for trolling: Because it was easy and fun. If you can start a predictable flame war about music by just saying "Does anyone here like Blink 182?" in trade, then I'd sure do so and laugh about the stupid responses.

Most people who troll try to find people who are overreacting to something and then play along with that to incite a bigger overreaction.

Short and quick survey.

I started to fill it out but it's kind of hard for me to come up with numbers since I really don't spend a lot of time reading trade chat which is where the most "trolling" occurs. I don't run into it while actively playing the game since I tend to spend a lot of time just out questing or doing stuff with friends.

I know it exists and it is disruptive to those who don't know how to deal with the "trolls" but it is not disruptive to me at all since I have dealt with forum "trolls" on various forums (both game related and non) for years now.

About the only stuff on the survey that I could reliably answer would be my gender, age, amount of playtime, and the definition of a "troll" (one who says things designed to incite others.) So, if you want to include it, I'm female, over 41, over 30 hours a week played.

oh my god!
that means *I* am a troll!!!!

I VERY often just blurt out, in /trade chat: "Rouges are overpowdered!"

And it works every ... single... time!!!!

I still cannot believe the number of people who don't read.

Would linking to TVTropes in the survey for the purposes of trolling the author of a survey on trolling be considered meta?

Either way, I answered the other questions more or less truthfully.

I took the survey...

I'm not horde so I don't encounter trolls that much, but I did tank a ZG the other day.

That's because the definition is almost completely subjective - one person's comments are trolling to some but telling it like it is to others, a Muslim player might have considered the cheers and shouts of the news of OBL's demise to be trolling while a Democrat might consider have considered people cheering last November's election results the same way, many probably consider telling off poorly playing party members to be trolling.

Then there's griefing - while technically different due to it being "actions" instead of "words" I'm sure many don't make the distinction as, while the means might be different, the intent and effect on the target(s) is the same.

So saying that people don't use the word "troll" correctly is like saying that one should only put ketchup instead of vinegar on french fries or that salad dressing and pineapple slices have no place on pizza.

I think this usage comes from the verb; not the noun.
#18 May 19 2011 at 9:51 PM Rating: Default
The term is actually a fishing term - you take a large basket or basket-shaped net and drag it behind your boat and catch whatever you can by stuff getting scooped up in it.

The cyber troll works in the same fashion except his net is poor/controversial behavior.

So just as the fishing troller isn't targeting a specific fish, but simply happy with whatever random seafood he catches, so too is the cyber troller since his objective usually isn't to make a specific person miserable, but anyone he can catch up in his bad behavior.

Wikipedia says that you're correct, though trolling is a fishing term as well, just not what rusttle described.

No. Exactly not. The point you're making is exactly the point I'm argueing against. What I see so incredibly often is people calling folks that simply swear or disagree with them "trolls". That's so off the point. I'm not saying 'trolling' has to have ONE PURE AND CLEAR definition, but somebody cannot "consider" something trolling. A Muslim who has problems about cheers and shouts of OBL's demise can consider the shouters ********. Not trolls. What they're doing has nothing to do with trolling.

What you're argueing about is the definition of '*******' or 'prick', I'm trying to say that trolling is different from that. Whatever your assigned meaning, 'a troll' != 'an *******'. They *are* to different things. It might be my own fallacy, but it annoys the crap out of me when person A insults person B and person B calls person A a troll in return. That would be similar to you insulting me and me replying "Well yeah, but you're being a car mechanic now!".

I'd agree that the meaning of 'trolling' is somewhat limited. Ignoring the fishing term, trolling could be defined as the act of purposely drawing attention to oneself through provocation.

I could walk in here and say that Moz was a ****, which would, assuming for a moment that I was incorrect*, likely prompt some kind of response from either Moz or the community. Mission accomplished. Attention pour moi, or however those French bastards say it.

A troll is also slang for a homosexual man looking for a partner. Take it for what it's worth.
