Why do people hate "kids" playing WoW?Follow

#152 Feb 26 2008 at 5:12 PM Rating: Decent
I'm 14 and i play, i'm generally more mature then others. Sometimes its not even kids, people just assaume that. It could be someone in there 20's who's drunk, or high. I'm not a prefect typist, like if i'm in Battlegrounds, or an Instance i might say somthing to shorten it up, because you really don't have time to type perfectly at those times. And one thing i never do, is capitalize I's when im talking about myself. And typing isn't a big issue anyway, like someone said, its the immatureity, everyone says "lol" and things like that, but somthing like "plz" is just unnessacary, if you're really that lazy, then wow, just wow. Unless, like i said, you're in Battlegrounds or somthing like that. But poor punctuation is just unnessacary see how annoying this is it annoys me even more then the immaturity or anything because you dont know what theyre talking about and then you get the plzs and whatnot and it only makes it worse

#1) why are you telling anyone your age? This is a game, who freaking cares about age and/or gender.

The FBI cares. A lot. They have special people who's job it is to go online and pretend to be around 13 or 14. Why? Go take a look at the topic about hitting on people. If the person you are hitting on through the computer is 14, you're potentially breaking the law, and it's on you to prove you didn't know if you get arrested for it. That's why age and the internet has always been a big deal.

Note I said potentially breaking the law. You'll have to do some research on this to fully understand what I mean, as I'm in no mood to explain further in this medium.

#3) you're only as young or old as you act.

personally, i act usually like a 14 year old, emote things like /fart on people, i swear like a sailor too.

Those actions are another reason people hate 14 year olds on the internet.

It relates a lot to sociology.

I like to think of myself as a 'mature' player (I'm in my 40's). I've met some very nice young people who I am very proud to have on my friends list and who I enjoy questing with whenever I get the chance. I've actually learned quite a bit from them, too, as I am still new to WoW.

Basically I try to take everyone at face value - if they approach me politely, I'm polite back and I don't really care how old they are. If someone is ill-behaved (no matter what their age) I try to ignore them and find some place else to play until they leave me alone.

My pet peeve is anyone, young or old, who begs for gold. I don't mind tipping for services or sharing with a friend, but I don't give handouts to strangers - I worked hard for it and they can, too.

Well I can't speak for everyone. I don't play with kids in my neighborhood because for starters, that's just creepy, but also because I have nothing in common with them and they are not a peer to me. So with that thought, why would we want to play with them in game? Why do they even care if adults don't like playing with them?!? Find the other kids who make up the 26% of the MMO community and play with them and leave the adults alone. RPGs are adult themed like WoW happens to be. What escapism could a kid possibly need from life? The only thing they have to worry about is if mom or dad will make something they'll like for dinner.

Rules I live by:

1) Can they fight at the level they're trying to fight?
2) Do they whine and complain when they are(for gear reasons) excluded from an exciting guild raid.
3) Do they monologue continuously?
4) Are they helpful to all in the guild?

That's it, no mention of age there?

However we have found that the majority of those who break the above rules are "kids".

Edited for spelling errors.

Yes, because you know, I would have no clue what to do in game if I didnt have to constantly help someone around.
Do you have any idea how many of those "needing help asap" can exist in one guild?

I leveled 2 toons to 70 in PuGs, including my Kara key. I made gold for 2 epic flying mounts without help from anyone. I geared my toons to my standards, pretty high I admit, but none told me what to do - I can read forums and advices just like everyone else.

I built up a guild that is clearing Kara in a day second month after stepping in it for the first time ever.
And all that took time, didnt happen overnight.

So now when I have time and means to play what I want and actually pick and choose - now I have to invest some more time in somebody elses gearing, keying, whatever?
I help when I feel like it. And definitely not all in guild. Some of them dont really deserve it and need to move for themselves.

Why would I run normal Slabs for 150th time because someone is incapable of making team with their own gear and experience level, even if there are like 15 such people in guild online at that moment. Because its easier to whine and be babysitted than put some real effort?

No thanks.
And I am not a kid, very far from it.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but another reason i tend to play with older people in game is cause of the chat...

In guild chat we often go Off-topic and end up talking about drugs/sex/politics/etcetc...

I don't really want another whisper from someone in guild..

"Hi, I would prefer that you did not talk about that infront of my son, he is only young and should not be tainted by such talk."
followed by a /gquit.

Hmmm some bad phrasing on my part sorry. rule 4 should have read "Helpful to all in guild, for a reasonable amount of time" Cos that is one thing that bugs me, the constant whining for help when I soloed two characters to 70 (pretty much).

I don't hate "kids" playing WoW. What I do hate is people spamming about Dirge and you have to admit that the spammers are mainly kids.

I don't hate all the "kids"(18 here)
actually our Main healer in my guild is 13 years old, and he does a damn good job.

why I dislike playing wow with kids is:

1.they usually roll huntards(sorry, but it is my observation)
2.They ask random people for money/run throughs
3.They can't spell worth a damn, and don't try(I ned ur halp with deadmine!!!!)
4.They are more likely to not know how to play their class, and don't take instruction well
5.Way more likely to be rude for no reason.

Yes. some "kids" are good players, and fun to get to know.
many however, are not

I am a kid. And sometimes other kids get on my nerves. They ruin it for those of us who don't choose to be asinine.(<---My mom uses that word! lol)
Anyhow, kids do ask a lot for help in instances and stuff. Gold as well.
But I never really had to ask for any help. There was always a group doing something on Shadowsong that I needed to do. And alot of the time I'd be in the LFG thingy, or waiting by an instance for a group and a higher level player would come by and basically tell me I'm going with them into the instance(Thank you, Alex). And now, being at 70 with my main I return that kindness to those same people whenever possible.

As many people have already mentioned I have no problem playing with anyone at any age, as long as they act maturely, responsibly and treat others with respect. But that goes both ways.

Sometimes I think the younger players get a bad rap just because they are younger. I have met *kids* of all ages in this game, and the other game I played before; and when it comes to theatrics, immature behavior and/or whining, age has no boundaries!

Using BG as a example I think it is a lot more likely that the one screaming orders and how much there team suck is more on the late teen side than the early teen, Mostly because its a lot more likely that the kids are the ones not listening than the ones barking orders.

I personally dont care how young someone is. yes i use text speak and butcher the english but ooo well umm most of my problems with younger people has been immaturity and the only 3 younger than 18's that joined my guild. Raided the Guild bank. Was always asking for help no matter what people were doing and getting pissed if we didnt do it. (i mean honestly running from outlands to wetlands to kill a rare person is kinda rediculous) Just be respectful

Lie, tell em your 19, then after you proved you can be mature and help keep the guild drama-free then tell em it's your 14th birthday on the weekend and your wondering if there's a raid you need to schedule around.

QFT again.

The unfortunate truth is, age = maturity level in general, so many people won't even bother giving an underage player a chance because they don't want to deal with the possible outcomes. No, it's not always true that age = maturity level obviously, there are many exceptions. It's not necessarily the guild/players fault they feel this way. I'm sure that you've had plenty of experiences with immature players and know how annoying it can be. Some people would rather not deal with it. You just need to stick to your guns, and let your actions and attitude speak for themselves. Eventually you'll find a good guild that will give you a chance, regardless of your age bracket.

I'm 21, and I can say that yes, I do sometimes find kids to be incredibly annoying but there are other times that they amaze me to no end. I was partied in a group with an 8 year old and a 6 year old. They told me their ages right away and told me that the 6 year old couldn't type very well so just routine the questions through the 8 year old. I could hardly keep my amazement to myself when they were curtious, kind, mature and more than helpful.

But, along with that. I helped a kid run deadmines while I was bored and the next hour after that was filled with...

Baginbounty: WANNA HELP ME GET A NEW PET IN DA BARRENS?!?!?!
Arex: No, I'm in an instance.
Baginbounty: AFTER DAT!
Arex: Dude, I'm in an instance.
Baginbounty: CRAP! I GOT HOMEWERK TTYL!!!!!!!
Baginbounty has been ignored.

Thats the kind of crap I can't handle from the younger players.

Someone said earlier said something about my age being high or drunk, to this I must lol because I know im guilty of that. I've had my fair share of Saturday mornings when I get home from the bar and I feel this intense urge to be useless and annoying on wow.

Hello,

I am only 16, and yes I do take the things people put out there. I've only just started WoW so I don't know if I'd be accepted in large raiding guilds. I am the GM of my guild though, we have 30+ members, and a growing website. I don't do immature things and I type with grammar and try to keep most harsh things to myself. I don't know why people think the young people are immature, I've explored many different forums on the net, and have pretended to be many different people, from different ages, countries, genders, you name it. I think this, may be the reason for the way older people act. Because you can't see them, or touch them, what have they to fear? Imagine if a twelve year old person started a huge guild with hundreds of members, pretending to be much older then his real age. What if the person told the members that they were actually only twelve, most would leave.

I hate the fact that they try to escape you because of our "immaturity". I'm not an immature person, I listen to Melodic-Death metal and get B's in English, I don't fit in with the pack, I act as an indiviual, yet people stiff ignore me for being young, when I ask them why, its the same; "Go home kid", or "WoW isnt your kinda game mate", it's really frustrating, and should be stopped, besides, in WoW, we're all the charcters age, so what does it matter? And yes, I do see the "kids" that misbehave and act immaturely, and I understand that this is why the older population don't like young people. I often see things like "Omg you'r 40 and you play WoW!?" or "Wtf you're playing WoW with a baby, ur a loser man" So I don't know how to help the situation, because, in my opinion, there are most immature youths out there then mature ones. But the older people should show some respect.

- Safii.

Its not just the immaturity, most kids see this as an escape from school, until homework time, but that's where the problems arise. Some kids leave their manners at the log in screen, just last week a 13 year old told me to F*** off because I wouldn't run him through deadmines(Background info: Clear for guildie) now I know that there are kids/teenagers that are sometimes more mature then the adults but that is a rare find.

What most Raiding guilds hate about kids is the Drama, QQing over lost rolls on loot, asked to sit out a run for a class more needed for that runs roster compliation. Always begging for free runs through instances to twink out their Alts or for whatever reason they give you, "I die to much I need better gear".

Sorry for the half reply/half rant

Well, my husband is like that with his guild, but he did have one member that was young in the guild. It's not really about age as it is maturity level and a lot of people who are aged 16- are immature jerks. That doesn't mean everyone, but in my experience, a majority.

Trust me, if you play well and are a mature user you'll get asked to join up in groups. If you act immature (even if you're 26) you probably won't get asked in a group again.

I've been in a lot of bad groups so I can see why some guild leaders would not include younger players.
#175 May 15 2008 at 6:30 PM Rating: Excellent
I think yours is a good question OP and doesn't make you seem like a "******" at all.
I personally wouldn't kick someone from a guild/group based solely on age, but I can see why some adults wouldn't want to be in the same guild as kids, and I think it is pretty much the exact same as why kids and adults aren't best friends in the outside world as well. As someone mentioned right on the first page, adult worlds and child/teenager worlds are completely different things. Most times when people say they became friends with someone it's because they have a lot in common and frankly, that's far less likely to happen if you're from two different worlds.

If you throw in the less likely to have something to talk about that interests both parties with the community mindset that kids tend to be more immature and annoying and of course, less likely to do what their told when they need to be told what to do, then you get the situation we have...
