EQ2 - Mystery or Math problem?Follow

#1 Apr 24 2009 at 5:08 AM Rating: Decent
So if you’ve played EQ2 long enough, I’m sure you have, at one time or another, run into a situation where you just couldn’t figure out a number and how it relates to what you are fighting. An example would be avoidance. Anyone can look in their persona window and see what their avoidance is, but is this accurate?

The answer is yes and no. The numbers displayed in your persona window generally refer to how they affect you when fighting a mob of the same level. They do not reflect if you are fighting a yellow or orange mob. This is where the mystery comes into play. How exactly do you know what your stats will be when fighting a level 88 epicx4 boss?

Someone suggested to me that they tend to hide the exact numbers to keep a little mystery in the game, and prevent it from becoming a complex math equation. I can understand this much, but then I wonder if the inclusion of number in the first place was a good idea.

I mean, if my persona window says I have 100% chance to critically attack, then why is it that I attack this orange mob and end up with hits that aren’t critical!? Again, the answer is that crit, like avoidance, scales with level. So I then wonder if crit scales down. Like if I’m at 80% crit, and I attack a whole bunch of green mobs, will I effectively have 100% crit?

So what do you guys think? Do you prefer the math or the mystery of EQ2, or a balance of both?

That's EQ2Math for ya. It isn't given in detail. ;)
You actually need something like 102% crit to hit 100% of the time.
Not sure if it's something like all mobs have 2% crit miss chance or other stats affecting it.

Basically, 100% crit chance means you will hit the mob with critical damage 100% of the time if they have no stats. (0 agi, 0 str, 0 sta, 0 avoidance, etc). This is my theory though.

Hope this helps!

I don't play Eq2 anymore because I don't have a computer to play it on :(, but I think it means your stats to a mob that is your exact level or a white mob.. you know. Also I think you could figure out how much avoidance you have to a higher level mob by seeing the ratio in which how much avoidance you lose per level.. I can't really remember but I thought as you leveled up and were in the same armor your avoidance went down in percentage.. so find that ratio then multiply by the amount of levels the monster has on you and minus that from the percentage you have now. Ex: let's say you have a 50% chance to avoid an attack by a white monster as i covered in my theory... Then you lose lets say 5% of that avoiance per level then that means that a mob two levels above you would be 5%x2=10% which means you are at 40% avoidance to a mob two levels above you.. I know that 5% is a little drastic per level.. but i dont want to calculate with 2.50% difference or whatever it might be you know.. just try to figure it out by leveling a character also there might be a ratio of the ratio like it will decrease by 1.5 per level at level 10 but at 3.0 per level when you get to 60 or the other way around. But, thats my theory anyway. man I wish I had a computer right now I really miss EQ2 :/ almost two years now. The music by laura karpman is also so amazing. Also, if you are level 80 you might have to find out on an alt :p.

Well the reason why I love eq2 so much is because it involves so much math. But the mystery part I'm sure you can figure out the math part if you test enough lol ;p. So I like how some math formulas are hidden because then no one will notice but you and that will make you superior with that knowledge that much more.

My personal take on this is that we will never truely know the math behind the levels unless SOE posts it for us.

By the time any dedicated group of players with high math skills is able to reverse cruch the numbers, the numbers and their relations to each other will have been changed by SOE.

The figurings for each of those sets of numbers have been changed a few times in the past as it is.

First of all, for me it isn't about the math... it's about becoming immersed in the world of a well crafted MMORPG. Now, I know that under all the pretty textures and the rich graphic detail there is a massive amount of number crunching going on but if I wanted to focus on the numbers, I'd be playing Magic the Gathering!

That said, I think that any numbers you see must be considered relative to your opponent's level. In other words, your character stats represent value in a white encounter. If you go up against something yellow, your skills are already at a disadvantage. And if your target is orange or red, don't expect to land much of anything at all.

In the same vein, when you go up against lt. blue and green targets, they really can't do you much harm and pretty much everything you toss at them lands without effort.

Yeah, the percentage for each level is increased which is what i meant by the ratio of a ratio but i bet there is a way to find out.. if not, the advanced combat tracker could show you some results.
