hey there everyone. just thought I would drop a nice little line about a really cool thing coming with GU52. Player-written books. Yes, you read that right, player-written books in EQ2. Rothgar gave us a small bit of info on the EQ2Players site, and I must say, I'm really looking forward to it.

That's pretty sweet. Now I can give away all my little stories that I write to my friends. :P

yeah. I'm looking forward to it as well. I got some nice ideas that I'd like to actually have as in-game books instead of just as fan-fiction on a website. not to mention, putting the guild charter/guild rules into a book to give to all new members, guild lore, member adventures...the list is as limitless as your imagination. can't wait. heck, even got my sage up to 50, because on the forums, Domino was saying the recipies to make the blank books would be level 50+ sage quested. so I got the level 50+ sage, now just to copy him to test and await the introduction onto the test server. fun fun fun times await.

I personally cant wait! I've got a bunch of EQ2 fiction that I've already written, just waiting for the booskt o be available.

And I got a carpenter to boot! :)

Are the books carpenter made? And if so, will we need to buy the recipe or are they already included in our lists?

It would be interesting, as Qwash said for guild charters and rules, a sort of visitors book (if books can be added to, would be fun for player vendors, getting feedback from buyers), quest books for guildhalls with detailed quest explanations (perhaps not so good for this site then though :D).

Other ideas for player written books:

Guides - "The preffered Illusionist casting order - by Squiggy McGee
Doctrine - Super Guild - the Guild Charter... to be placed in the guild hall.
Commands - writing out a book of command-line functions that you might otherwise forget.

ok, to answer aquestion that has already been posted:

no, these books will not be carpenter made. according to the great and glorious Domino, tradeskill developer goddess that she is, informed us in the EQ2 Forum thread (the one specific to this topic) that the book recipies will be for level 50+ sages and will be quested. But since the initial books are completely tradeable (at least that's the impression I got from the forums), sages can just put blank books up on the broker.

I have a level 50 sage that I'm gonna try to get a couple more levels out of and then copy him to the test server for when this feature hits test.

Now, as I mentioned, while the blank books are sage made (at least according to Domino right now), anyone can start writing in a blank book and become an author. and there are alot of things that have been discussed on the forum thread (and probably still more since I last saw it early yesterday afternoon), so if anyone is curious about what all else this will cover, start posting here, or head over to the EQ2 Forums and read up on the thread. lots of nice things that players have requested and even made Rothgar go, "hmm, I didn't think of that, but I will add it to the list," or, "yes, I would like something like that also, and will try to get it out at a later date." (i.e. guild hall librarian NPC amenity, actual functioning bookcases that work like storage containers to hold the books so they don't count against total item count, etc.)

now, I'm sure that there will be some who are wondering, since I brought up item counts, if the player written books will count against item limit in houses and guild halls. the answer is: No, they won't. You can have as many books in you house or guild hall as you want until you hit the hard limit (not the limit on the house, but the limit where the shear number of items in the zone slows everything down).

This is something that I've been looking forward to for a while, so I'm keeping up on it, so if you want to keep the discussion up, lets do it.

This could be a rather interesting feature. I take it there can only be one copy of a book in existance at a time unless you go threw the effort of making multiple copies?

I can just see the use for Roleplay guilds who have information on their guild web sites but have members that dont veiw it often, they can make a few of these books holding the information and let people view the info in game.

Yeah, i really think this is going to be fun

Actually, making copies is really REALLY easy. if you are the author, just have the original in your inventory, along with at least one blank book, right click on the original, select "Copy". the cursor will be highlighted indicating you are ready to copy. then just click on one of the blank books in your inventory, and presto-changeo, you have a copy of your book. just make sure you give away the copy not the original in case you want to make more copies.

just a note, only authors can make copies of books they have written. so if you see a book that you like, and you want to redo it yourself, you will have to copy it word for word into a blank book to make it your own. a bit of a pain, but just like editing, copying a book is only available to the author of the book.

A little off topic but something I always wanted to see was a guest book that I could place in my home and that other players could sign when they came to visit my place. That way I would have an ongoing document of the folks who had been to visit my house.

Rothgar (I think it Was a red name at least) mentioned that the code used for the books would be similar enough to the "guest list" in a house/hall that it Would be possible to do. However, at this time they are not going to do it until they see how everything rolls out. So it Could possibly happen in a few months maybe more?

If so, we can hope for the best :D

Books are already cluttering my appartment, it would be unhandy that player written books add to the total count. A different kind of storage would be handy, some sort of one box of which the content does not count to the total number allowed in the house would be good, glad to see that's being thought off.

Yes, Katasrofa, you are correct, Rothgar did mention that the coding for guest books would be similar to the player written books and that is something that he wants as a feature also. The Devs want to see how well the books are accepted by the game community as a whole before implementing looking at doing something like that

No, the player-written books will NOT count against total house count. the only limit will be an actual "hard-limit" count that the servers can handle (apparently around 1000 books from what I've heard). as for the different kind of storage, one thing that was mentioned was having bookcases act kind of like strong boxes or something for books only. not too sure if that will be implemented but I think it would be cool.
