New to Game and to Illusionist ClassFollow

Hi all:

I have a general spell question concerning upgrading. I have noticed that as I level I get a new spell name, with the same icon as a lower level spell. Now, my question is should I upgrade the lower level spell to adept, master and so forth or get rid of that spell and just upgrade and use the higher level spell?

For instance, at level 1 I get Phantasmal Shock and can upgrade it to Master I. But at level 6 I get Phantasmal Blast which has the exact same description of effects, but can also be upgraded to Master I. And, I see this with many other spells as you progress levels. Should I just get rid of the lower level spell and concentrate on upgrading the higher level ones that have the exact same abilities or keep them both?

I'm a little bit confused here as to what I should or should not upgrade.

Thanks so much and btw I love EQ2 so much. I can't wait to utilize the housing options! There's so much to do!

And thank you everybody who helped convince me to go give this great game a try. I have found a new home :).

Ohh, one more thing. Which tradeskill profession would be most advantageous to being an illusionist? I was thinking Sage so that I will eb able to craft my own spell upgrades or whatever they are named. But, after I have all the spells upgraded that will be it, correct? Is this a wise choice for me to or should I consider a different tradeskill profession? Thank you guys and gals. :)

First the spell questions. It is almost always more advantageous to upgrade to a higher version level of a spell. If you happen to have an Adept III or Master of a current spell, the lower quality but higher level upgrade to that spell might not do as much damage/etc right away, but in the long run it'll get resisted less. I'm a big fan of upgrading. Instances where you wouldn't are rare, but they do happen. Coercer's, for example, get a charm spell to control monsters. If you happen to have the Master I version of the very first tier 1 charm spell, you'd continue using that before using the level 70+ charm spell at any quality below Master I. I'm not sure if illusionists have such an "exception" spell, but just be aware that they do exist.

A note on Masters: To be honest, in the early stages of the game the Masters are a waste of your coin. Depending on how much you play, you'll level fairly quickly through the first 30 (possibly 40) levels. You'll out-level any low level Master spells quick enough that you are better served by saving your money for better gear and for spell upgrades in the mid-upper level ranges...those level ranges that you will be spending more time in and thus getting more mileage out of spell upgrades.

Tradeskill..yeah, Sage would be nice. Even after you make your own skills you'll be able to hire out your services to other mages who need spell upgrades. Skill makers are always in demand. You could also consider tailoring to make your own robes and other cloth armor pieces. Another option would be provisioner. Drink for power regen is very important to every class, but mages especially (and the cost of good drink gets silly at higher tiers).

Glad you're having fun!

Stu is spot on with the advice, as usual. Smiley: nod

I will reiterate a few things though:

- Spell upgrades lower the chance for the spell to be resisted, increase the damage, duration, or a number of other effects depending on the spell. Getting the master of a level 5 spell isn't always the best idea because in about 10 levels you will get an upgrade to that spell line anyway.

My advice would be to try to get your spells to at least Adept 1, just to give you a decent version of the spell, and then try out different casting scenarios to see if the spell is used often enough to benefit you by taking it to Adept III or Master I.

- Many of the tradeskills will be a benefit to you in a number of ways. All classes need food/drink for example, so that is a product in constant demand because the item is consumable. So while a single drinks at level 80 for example will sell for maybe a few gold, many people buy at least 20 of them (especially for the foods with a longer duration).

Sages make spells that those classes will have to use at least once, and because they require a rare item to make (which rare depends on the tier) they sell at a fast rate for a nice chunk of cash.

Just my Smiley: twocents

Welcome to Everquest 2 and all that jazz.
