New to Game and to Illusionist ClassFollow

Hi all:

I have a general spell question concerning upgrading. I have noticed that as I level I get a new spell name, with the same icon as a lower level spell. Now, my question is should I upgrade the lower level spell to adept, master and so forth or get rid of that spell and just upgrade and use the higher level spell?

For instance, at level 1 I get Phantasmal Shock and can upgrade it to Master I. But at level 6 I get Phantasmal Blast which has the exact same description of effects, but can also be upgraded to Master I. And, I see this with many other spells as you progress levels. Should I just get rid of the lower level spell and concentrate on upgrading the higher level ones that have the exact same abilities or keep them both?

I'm a little bit confused here as to what I should or should not upgrade.
