Which priest class to play?Follow

#1 Aug 23 2008 at 1:43 PM Rating: Decent
Long time EQ player, short time eq2 player looking to come back. Since ive always played more melee oriented classes (pallyEQ1 and bruiserEQ2) ive decided that this time I would be more of a caster/healer type. So, right now ive narrowed it down (kinda) to either a druid or shammy class mainly a melee spec warden or mystic. Im hoping for a little help in deciding. Im looking for 2 main things in my class:
-good soloing (as this is what I generally end up doing)
-good endgame grouping/raiding ability

Thanks

I have a lvl 80 warden and I am very happy with the character. It has been my main for about 4 years and is still a lot of fun to play. A close friend plays an 80 mystic but has back-burnered the character in favor of a swashy.

Melee speced, a warden will output a fairly high level of damage and is still one of the fastest healers in the game.

I soloed my warden most of the way between 0 & 80 with some grouping & some raiding and had no problem getting there! In addition, wardens are in high demand as single healers for most any group. Furthermore, the groups where a 2nd healer is needed (like RE2) are that way no matter what class the other healer is. (So it isn't like these groups could be single healed by a different class.) I often see LFG call for the end game instances where the group has either a plate or chain healer and is looking for leather.

I don't keep my warden melee speced because I prefer the root & nuke technique but I don't shy away from a face to face encounter with a mob either! Geared with T8 master crafted (player made rare harvest) leather and decent jewelry, you'll have a large enough power pool to do pretty much anything you like.

Geared with fabled (dropped) armor and high end jewelry you'll pretty much be in a position to take on anything you can think of!

Lately, there has been a lot of complaining on the warden O-boards regarding our *less than stellar* performance in a T8 raid environment but personally I have never had a problem holding down a slot in the MT group...

The other big point in the druids favor is the ever expanding list of druid ports available. Being able to pop in anywhere in the game world is (for me) a huge advantage.

In all honesty, I would try all 3 priest classes. Just to see which ones you enjoy the most.

For me, it's a toss up between my Fury and my Mystic.

If you want easy solo class, a druid is what you want. But for raids i wouldnt choose anything but the Defiler. Templars can do good in raids too...lots of crit heals and easy to solo. But i would still go for the shammys :)

ps : sorry my poor english

While I agree that druids make the best (and fastest killing) solo priests, I don't think the above statement is entirely accurate.

Here's the thing; Most if not all raid leaders will create an MT group consisting of the following:
tank (usually a guardian)
cleric
shaman
druid
support class - buffer or debuffer - (bard)
support class (illy or coercer)

Sometimes a 2nd tank (like a zerker) will replace one of the support toons but the point is that ALL THREE types of healer are usually represented in the main tank group because it gives the tank the best overlap of coverage without running into spells that over-write one another (as you would have with more than one of a given type of healer)

The different healing sub-types heal in different ways and each brings different strengths to the table. In my experience, all are welcome...

I really dont and cannot agree with 3 types of healers in the MT group. The ONLY fight it would help is Leviathan, other ocasion is a total waste. Unless your healers cannot do the job, wich puts the raid in a bad situation. Tank, shammy, cleric, dirge, caster (util), other scout like a swashi for example would be much more helpfull then a druid.

Hard to say between those 2 classes. There are quite a few of both running around (which shows the popularity, but also the drawbacks...competition.). They both meet your criteria, though I usually see people looking for Shamans a little more often overall on my server (Unrest).

That aside, you might want to have a look at Inquisitor. Very good soloers as well, relatively high dammage and some decent utility...and rare (on Unrest anyway). On my server they are one of the least represented classes. There are reasons for that of course, they give up some healing power for a little more personal DPS (seeing as its a healer class...some people aren't fond of that hehe), DPS boosts to others, and some decent Debuffs...but mostly their benefits are just not as recognized or known (except by meleers! lol). They lack that 1 or 2 "Oh ya. They have that!!" spells.

I have an 80 Alt as an Inquis. I don't play him much as my main consumes almost all my time. He's quite a beast soloing though, and I often don't have in logged in for more than an hour before at least 1 person tries to ninja-invite him to their group or tries to recruit him to guild. I also know that I've been running regular raids for years and have always found Inquisies hard to find. Masters are cheaper on the broker too (again, on my server) :)

Anyway, just food for thought :)

On the blackburrow server there seems to be more of a demand for shaman classes but druids tend to be better at soloing. I'd try out a warden and a Defiler take each one up to like lvl 20 and see which one you enjoy playing more.
