I have a new PC w/ Vista - how do I get rid of lag?Follow

I do not think I am going to be able to play EQII. I play World of Warcraft regularly and it never lags for me. I have a brand new computer that came with Windows Vista installed. I want to play EQII but it lags terrible. Every day I log into the game it is worse than the day before. I CANNOT SPEAK COMPUTERNESE. If you tell me it is my processor this or my memory that, I will have no idea what you are talking about. Can anyone offer a simple help. I turned everything in the display down to lowest setting so I'm walking thru a world that makes it look like I need glasses. Maybe my computer cannot hold two games? It seems to have plenty of memory though.

Before anything else we need your system specs.

Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Information

From there a window will pop up

From the system summary section we need

OS Name:
Version:
Processor:
BIOS Version/Date:
Total Physical Memory:
Available Physical Memory:

From the Components -> Display section we need

Adapter Type:
Adapter Description:
Adapter RAM:
Installed Drivers:
Driver Version:

Also, open your network monitor in game and give us the average ping rate and FPS. Someone else can tell you how to open that because I can't remember at the moment. BPS and packet loss info would be helpful as well but not necessary.

I read...that for Vista...you have to run EQ2 as an administrator or something like that...dont ask me how...i only know some tech stuff :P

Just because the system is new, doesn't mean it has enough horsepower for this game...

WoW is an entry level MMO with VERY LOW system requirements. EQ2 on the other hand uses a high-end game engine and requires a cutting edge computer if you are going to play with lots of graphic bells and whistles.

To run well, you will need;
A fast CPU
Lots of RAM
A great graphics card.

Posting your computer stats here will tell us where you are coming from. Even just the make and model number would help.

This is true but it does not affect the lag issue. It is more in regards to getting game to run period. (Or turn UAC off, which is simple and if you're mildly familiar with the programs you keep may be a better option).

I had lag on my laptop but thats because it was severely underpowered to play such a massive game. As the other post said, we need to know more of your computer specs to tell you where the outlaying problem may be at.

Somethings to try for now:
-Turn off all uneccessary running programs. This includes browsers, messengers, windows media player, anything that may bog down your computer.
-Defrag your computer if it hasnt had that done in awhile.
-What connection type do you have? If you are trying to play on dial up there is your problem right there.

Hope to hear back from you soon and we'll try to get you running smoothly in game.

I just upgraded recently to a brand new rig.. quad core, 9800 w/512, etc. The game runs smooth as a baby's butt now. While EQ2 does not take advantage of the features on most newer graphics cards, it does make a HUGE difference.

As long as you have enough RAM, the fact that you're running Vista should make no difference on a newer computer. If you are running Vista on an older P4 with only a gig of RAM then everything is going to run slower. Especially processor intensive programs like EQ2.

A lot of the newer "Vista capable" systems on the market are actually anything but. At minimum settings the system can handle Vista, unfortunately they can't really sell Vista with all the bells and whistles turned off.

A lot of the Vista machines being sold are only equipped with 1gig of Ram or less and onboard graphics chips that can't even handle Vistas Aero effects properly.

My Athlon 64 x2 4200+ only came with 512 and crappy onboard video which boasted the "Vista Capable" tag. After upgrading to 2gig and a NVidia 8800 my framerate still drops to 3 or 4 FPS once in awhile. Sitting at idle my system is using over a gig of memory and thats just Vista, Nortons and a few very minor background programs like my G15 LCD manager, keyboard profiler, Setpoint software and my Ideazon engine.
