I'm sure everybody is weary with newbie class questions, and is sensitive to not flaming. In this spirit, I respectfully ask those experienced in fighter classes for their thoughts on a plate wearer as a solo toon. I have other "more effiecnt" solo class toons, as they say in the forums, but I have an itch for a good old fashioned plate wearing tank that wade in and rips things up. In particular, I'm looking at the Guardian, Zerker, SK, and Paladin. I extensively read the class forums on Station and was disheartened to find quite a few comments concerning these mainstay classes being "broken" after Updates (and frustration on the developer time spent on other classes), that these have been nerfed and currently put out little DPS, and that these classes are designed for grouping and are the last choices for soloing. Bear in mind these statements aren't mine since have I no experience with these classes above level 5. Has anyone found that one of these four classes solos a bit better than the others? I would have to burn a level 32 toon, as I'm at my limit, so it's not a casual choice for me if the fighter class in general doesn't solo well. With all respect and thanks for your thoughts.

Mostly, I play healers (warden & fury), so my experience with tanks is all from a grouping point of view but I do tend to spend a good amount of time in duos and trios.

Since a tanks primary job is to absorb damage, not dish it out, you're going to find that none of them really excel at DPS. That is not to say thay can't dish out some hurt... only that it is never their strong suit.

Guardians tend to be the best tanks for full group and raid situations. They don't output a lot of damage but they can absorb more incoming damage then any other class.

Pallys and SKs both fit into the realm of hybrid classes in that they are sort of a combination of a tank and a healer. Unfortunately, because they are jacks of both trades, they are master of neither!

Without doubt, the best duo or small group tanks I have encountered have been zerkers and monks. Since you specified that you want a plate class tank I would recommend a zerker.

Zerkers are also hybrid tanks but instead of being tank/healer hybrids (like pallys and SKs) they are tank/DPS hybrids. It is for this reason that I think this would be much more to your liking.

One last point... take all the "broken" and "nerfed" comments in the SOE forums with a grain of salt. Those boards have always been a haven for folks who just want a place to complain about their class and more often than not, if you really examine their complaints the posters are unrealistic in their desires and expectations.

Good luck...

I appreciate your thoughts. I have Furys and Wardens and they are awesome. I heard they cut the Zerker DPS in a recent upgrade and there is much grumbling in the ranks. I decided to go with an SK. Healing, FD, nukes, buffs. I'm going the buckler+1 route with the stamina tree. I appreciate your help and hope I don't regret the Zerker decision.

truthfully, nearly every comment I've read on the SOE forums has been a complaint about something in the game. either a percieved "nerf" or the "inaccuracy" of in-game items compared to real-world equivalents, or just "why don't you have this, this, and this, in the game?" type posts. overall, I more or less go to the Forums to see if the Developers have posted anything new, and do my best to by-pass all the regular BS posts.

but to get this thread back on topic, the SK and berserker are both excellent soloers (I tend to solo alot, more by choice then necessity, and I have one of each). I also have a guardian, and as was mentioned, they don't solo all that well. now, that's not to say that they can't solo, just don't expect to kill things quickly if you do try to solo a guardian.

I know a lot of people love both the SK and Zerker for soloing. I have not played either myself, though.

As far as equality goes, word on the street is that Zerkers are above par. There are less issues with them than other hybrid tanks.

A guardian is great for groups and raids, but solo very slowly. If you are looking for a solo class, I would probably say go for Zerker first, then SK.

If you are still unsure, why dont you roll a couple of them and bring them up to 20? You will have a good understanding of the class then, and hopefully a good idea of which you want to take further

I have a Paladin, Guardian, Monk and Bruiser in my tank ******** I will take either of my leather wearers, Monk / Bruiser, any day over my plate wearers. They do more damage, have a decent heal and the big life saver, feign death.

Whatever you choose to be, have fun with it!

This is what makes Shadowknights great solo fighters. Their self-healing is second-to-none, decent damage, 60+% spell crits with minimal AA investment, plus they have the plate to take the big hits. On top of it all they're the only plate tank that can feign death. Good times.

Too bad nobody wants us for raids. :D
