i'm trying to get back into EQ2 but i need to know what software and packages i will need to be able to play the game and take advantage of everything...
so, besides RoK, will i need:
1) desert of flames?
2) Kingdom of sky?
3) Echoes of Faydwer?
Any help will be appreciated!

If you get RoK, you will have everything included. Very handy!
If you had an account before you can just come back for free for 2 months without buying anything, just pop onto Station and download the full game and login in with all expansions enabled.
