Basic question really, as a Pally is it better to use 1 hander + shield or 2 handers?

It's situational. When I'm fighting down-arrow solo mobs or large groups of solo mobs or even just no-arrow mobs I tend to go with the two-hander for the higher damage to end things quickly. If I run up on a big named mob, a heroic or a casting-happy mob I switch to sword-n-board. On tougher mobs like these you are going to want the extra protection, plus the extra stun you get from the shield slam attack is immensely useful for lowering the incoming damage you are taking.
Soloing = 2hs
Raiding/Instance = 1hs + shield
I must say that I never use a 2hs regardless. Not sure why but the DPS is not that better with a 2HS then a 1HS with a quick delay. Plus your shields give so much armor its not worth getting into trouble for a little more DPS.

sometimes its hard to find the right sword though..been running into that problem recently..I was gonna buy a sword and shield but i couldnt find any useful ones..
On my pally i never use a 2 hander...so i can only say that it depends on the situation(for some) I do admit that it seems 2 handers dont affect much, since you live longer and the dps dosnt make much of a difference compared to a fast 1 hander heh
I always used 1h/shield when I played my paladin. About the only time I used a 2h is when I was in a group and not the tank.
