Same as any other game:

Healer
Tank
Crowd control
+1/3 others

in fact you can probasbly skip any of the aforementioned three classes if you learn how to play well.

In fact, the best group i ever had was an EQ group consisting of

1x Pally (me) 2x Necro 1x Beastlord 1x Mage 1x Wizard, i don't think i dropped below 90% health the entire time we where together, fun times.

Yeah, EQ2 is nice in that the classes really are, for the most part, balanced (raid roles being an exception). Unlike some MMO's and even in a lot of cases in EQ1 you don't need a specific checklist of classes to have a good group. In EQ2 pretty much any tank + any healer + 4 of whatever else you can scrounge together will be able to take on 95%+ of all the group content in the game. There are a few exceptions...instances that have encounters uniquely suited to one class or another, but they are rare. For the most part a healer, tank and whoever else you can get to tag along will do just fine for almost anything you'll run across.

All classes make up a good group. Obviously you want a tank and healer.. but, I've seen all kinds of combos succeed when they learn how to work together.

The beauty part is that in this game duos and small groups function as well as traditional full groups. And a successful duo can be virtually any two classes.

The important thing is that you learn to play your class well, knowing your strengths and playing to them.
