Ok, I know all classes have merit and can make a group great but my question is this...
Is there one or two classes that are most sought after by groups because of either their rarity or abilities?
I know every group needs a tank and healer but it seems like the bard classes would be pretty popular.
Any ideas would be wonderful!

Rarity is always going to vary by server. I suppose you could roll a temp character on a given server and do some surveys there to see which classes were rare. However, to throw a monkey wrench into the deal, rarity will also change over time so the class you choose could be rare when you roll it but by the time you level him up the server could be swimming in them!
If anything, bards may be a little underplayed and if this is so, it could be because they are primarily a support class. They have great group buffs and mob de-buffs but are somewhat lacking in the DPS department and so do much better in a group then on their own.
I still think the best idea for any new player is to try several different classes out and see which is the ideal fit your play style. You're always going to be more attached to the class you have the most fun playing!

More importantly, the class that is most wanted this month, may well find him/her self sitting on the docks looking for a group the next month because the class on a server became so saturated with people looking to play the "most desired" class rather than what they have fun playing.
All classes are in equal demand if the people playing them, play them well and with skill. Regardless if a group can't find a healer to save their life; if the only healer available sucks, they'll probably just scrap the group instead. ;)
