Making the SwitchFollow

#1 Apr 20 2008 at 8:28 PM Rating: Decent
Well I am pretty certain the I will be making the switch to EQ2 in a week. I quit WoW (again), and I realize that this time there is nothing that will ever bring me back to it. The community in WoW is probably the worst I've experienced in a MMO, the lack of maturity just makes it unbareable most of the time. Once it got to the point where I could only stomach 10 minutes in a PuG with the usual four 11 year olds, then I knew it was over.

EQ2 really intrigues me because it seems to be (although I could be completely mistaken) a blend between FFXI and WoW. It has the maturity, positive community, and greater challange of FFXI and has the solo capeability/ free PvP system of WoW.

I am going to roll on a PvP server and I am looking at the Monk and Conjurer classes at the moment. I also enjoy playing Druid type healing classes. How do you think these particular classes will work out on PvP servers. Also, does EQ2 simply have free for all world PvP or are there instanced PvP events also? One other things what is the style of end-game here? Honestly, I sort of prefered end game in FFXI because it took a lot more leg work and cooperation to be successful. Thanks

Don't fret. I think most people are too busy playing to post on here. The forums are usually quite active.

Unfortunately, I can't really comment on your questions, as EQ2 is my first MMO and I've never drifted off anywhere else. So I can't compare it to other games from my own personal experience, only what I've heard from other gamers. Also, most EQ2 players (including myself) tend to play PvE, although there are a few PvPers on these forums. As far as I know, there are a few arenas for PvP, but I've never used them.

Sorry I can't of any more help.

Thanks for the response. I will just have to do some self discovery I suppose = ) I am going to start out by downloading the 14 day free trial and tinkering with a bunch of classes.

While the posting community here at Alakhazam is usually polite and helpful, they are not very timely. Other than the general discussion board, I've personally noticed little thread traffic for EQ2 on this site.

If you're looking for feedback of a more immediate nature that includes a vast number of responses, I would suggest you post your questions on Sony's own EQ2 forums.

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/forums/list.m

They even have both Trial version and Newbie Yard forums that specifically cater to your general questions. Also the Class Discussion link with take you to a sub forum where every class has it's own posting board.

(Please be warned that while many of the posters there are kind and willing to respectfully discuss disagreements, there is another noticeable minority of population there. From time to time, I run into arrogant and condescending elitists who's own way is the only correct way. While most of the other posters tend to mock these extremists, I just figured that a head's up warning was deserved.)

Yeah, the other rub is that we don't have a whole lot of resident PVP'ers in the AllaK board community for EQ2. There are a couple folk, but for the most part it's tough for most of us to answer PVP-specific questions ("how is X class in PVP", "advantages Y has over Z for PVP", etc.) as were are largely a PVE community. I felt bad because I saw your thread when you posted it, but didn't feel qualified to answer you because I've never played on a PVP server (I duel people for fun and play in the arena, but true PVP is a whole 'nother beast).

I'll send Spyder your way.

Play the class you enjoy.. Period. If you choose a class pending other people's opinions you'll have to purchase more accounts in order to sustain 23 different character slots.

PvP is not FFA.. thank god. It deters all the asshat 13 year olds from playing. There is a political system in place with a Good vs. Evil theme, rewards for completing PvP writs (aka bounty), and a title system.

You get 7 character slots so try a bunch of classes up to level 20 before making a decision, then delete and try others.

I'll try and keep an eye on this thread if you have further questions.

Good to see someone else disillusioned with WoW and looking to EQ2.

I have played WoW since the beta, actually, so over 3 years. However...during those 3 years, I also played both WoW AND EQ2 for one year. I have four lvl 70s in Warcraft, and many many alts. I have one lvl 61 in EQ2 and four lower lvl alts. I just recently "left WoW" again too. So, I feel pretty capable of "comparing" the games.

First of all, let me warn you (or encourage you) that the games are pretty much NOTHING alike, other than the fact they're both MMOs. They have ENTIRELY different "flavors," for lack of a better word, and you are RIGHT to assume an age/maturity difference between the two. It is a RARE thing to see anything even remotely close to "Barrens Chat" in EQ2. LOL! Both games have both positive and negative aspects, in my opinion.

I will say, from my obsservances, that EQ2 people are less "PvP oriented" for the most part. I personally think PvP in EQ2 is one of it's greatest weaknesses. However...if you're looking for a game that requires some amount of THINKING and an IQ above the single digits...that would be EQ2, and the community reflects that.

At first, you may find many things about EQ2 frustrating if you've been playing WoW very long. The broker (as compared to WoW's AH) is not very intuitive. It takes a bit more effort to understand how it works and effectively buy and sell. But it takes very little time to learn, and mastering the market is actually an intriguing challenge. :)

If you enjoy CRAFTING at ALL...EQ2 is a BLESSED experience compared to WoW. WoW's crafting is so....well....lame. It's entirely crippled. Yes, if you have the right mats, you push a button and get immediate and perfect results. Not so with EQ2. BUT...the REWARDS for crafting in EQ2 are FAR superior. Crafters actually are able to make a great amount of money, because, well...not everyone wants to LEARN to craft. Personally, I find the crafting very fulfilling.

Also...you cannot very easily solo to max level in EQ2. It is more challenging, even in the strategy and gameplay. And everything isn't made convienient, easy to find, or blatantly obvious. You may have to ask a LOT of questions of the community in EQ2. But guess what? When you have questions...you won't get 10 responses that resemble this: "n00b, how sutpid r u,r u a moron, dus ur momma like me 4 last night?" Or other such juvenile and retarded comments. You'll simply get a polite answer and sometimes, an offer of assistance in fulfilling whatever you're working on. CRAZY huh?

So....welcome to EQ2!

EQ2 is a bit more "serious" in the "flavor" of the game. It's not so "whimsical" as WoW. The community, and those you choose to group with, your guild, etc...play a much larger part in your enjoyment of the game. Try not to get too frustrated with all the UI and functional differences....you'll get it all done soon enough.

Oh and....enjoy having a home too (I mean like a house you can call your own and put rewards and items in that are special to you). I really missed that when I was away. And though it may sound small, it really adds to that sense of belonging to a community when you have a very personalized house.
