A follow-up post from Autenil:

Nodes are only locked while you're harvesting them. So basically, someone else can't start harvesting while you are (but they can as soon as you finish). If you cancel harvesting, it immediately unlocks.

So, it's not 'true' node locking. It was really implemented more to fix an exploit rather than prevent people from stealing nodes.
