Some questions from new playerFollow

I posted these questions on the Station forums, but didn't get much help. Just some random newb stuff.

Anyway, I've played WoW, FFXI and EVE previously so I see things through those lenses.

PvP: How is the PvP in this game? After my experiences leveling on a PvP server in WoW, I plan on going PvE here. Are there any equivalents to arena or battlegrounds in EQ2?

Server choice: I know there is no 'right answer' to this type of question, but it is still worth asking. For example, some servers might have a predominantly foreign component (nothing wrong with that - just want a server where prime time is eastern US time and I understand the language). Not really interested in RP or PvP, and would like a server where prime time is eastern US evening with a fair amount of activity at a variety of levels (if that exists).

Class choice: When I started FFXI, I knew going in that a lot of my time would be spent in parties so I chose my class with that in mind. When I started WoW, I gave no thought to class desirability at endgame and I feel like that was a mistake. What are some of the more 'dersirable' classes at endgame in EQ2 (both in raids and small group)?

Endgame: In FFXI, they seperated the storyline progression (small groups) from the raid-based gear grind. In WoW almost all endgame PvE progression is raid based. What are the activities at endgame in EQ2 and how does it compare?

Older content: In FFXI, missions from previous expansions were still run even after new stuff was released (at least when I played it was like that). In WoW, most older content is abandoned. How is the content from the older EQ2 stuff treated?

Factions: Can players of different allignments play together?

Useful online resources: Can anyone suggest any good EQ2 websites or FAQs? SO far I've found eq2.wikia.com and eq2.gamepressure.com. I suppose I'll use Allakhazam in the future too.

That's all I have for now. Any help is appreciated.

I can answer some of your questions.

1.PVP I do not know as I've never been into it much. Hopefully someone can help direct you

2. Server choice is really about what you're looking for. You want PVE? Tons of choices. I'm on Blackburrow myself and I can say there are plenty of people there. RP? PVP? Again, I dont think it matters too much. I believe Luclin(?) is the best for RP from what Ive heard but I can not really cement that.

3. Im sure you have heard this before, but eerily enough on this game its true!!! All classes are needed and wanted at raids. There are highs and lows for each class, each server. If it seems your class is in a funk, give it a month haha. For class you have several choices. Read up on each one, pick a few that call out to you and play them until 20. By then you should have a good idea on which you prefer.

4. Endgame content you have epic quests to keep you busy, instances with fantastic loot so its actually worthwhile to do them, lots of regular quests and faction quests. You also have Achievement points to work on so whil you may be lvl 80, you still have xp to gain!

5. Older content is still worthwhile. We're raiding the top tier of raiding content in my guild but still go back time and again to hit up some of the older content. For every Boss you kill your guild gains XP (yes there are guild levels) so ti's worthwhile to keep going back. The last epic quests they added into the game made classes go all over the continents on old world new world settings in order to get updates. EQ2 really tries to utilize all aspects of the game for all levels.

6. I know for PVE servers, any faction can group together, understand each other, etc. I dont think you can for PVP though.

7. EQ2flames, EQ2i, gamepressure.com eq2interface

PVP on the PVP servers is par for the course when it comes to MMO PVP. Gankers, hunting groups, etc. On PVE servers you have city Arenas as well as a /duel command which initiates a challenge in which two people can consent to duke it out.

Server choice: <snip> Not really interested in RP or PvP, and would like a server where prime time is eastern US evening with a fair amount of activity at a variety of levels (if that exists).

Unrest or Najena sound like they fit the bill.

Yeah...like DSD says this is really a server dependent question. On some servers top end healing is scarce and on other servers you can't find a tank to save your life. Because you have so many character slots, I'd say just plow in and test the waters. Ask some high end folk on the server what they generally see being looked for and find something you can live with that fits.

Endgame: <snip>What are the activities at endgame in EQ2 and how does it compare?

Epic quests and heroic quest lines, group and raid instances and contested content, looong solo quest-lines..all with lore/story attached to it. Crafting if you want to go that route. Plenty to keep you busy even after you reach the cap.

Older content: <snip>How is the content from the older EQ2 stuff treated?

Like DSD says, there is love given to old content. Quests send you back, multiple level range instances of different zones, etc. Plus EQ2 players all seem to be altoholics and people are constantly making new characters so even after you play through a tier, you can always go back with another toon or mentor down to help lower level folk and to visit content you never saw your first time through.

Factions: Can players of different allignments play together?

On PVE servers, yes. On PVP, no.

You've got the bases pretty much covered. I'd maybe only add tentonhammer, who seems to have some decent guides laying around as well.

That's all I have for now. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks guys. These answers are almost exactly what I was looking for (posted in the newbie yard on Station and didn't get much).

One more question: are there any server specific forums like FFXI has here?

Thanks!

EQ2 Allah tends to be a small tight community and no we've never grown to a point where separate server forums would be an advantage.

However, the server boards at official forums tend to be pretty good. Far better, in fact, than the newbie garden boards where you first posted. Maybe it's that people care more about posting on a board dedicated to their home turf or maybe the newbie boards just aren't very good but for whatever reason, there is a marked difference.

I'll add a couple of sites of interest.

If you're into crafting, you must visit the definitive site EQ2 Traders

To give you the link that Stuegin mentioned Ten Ton Hammer (read the Coyote Humour too!)

Another regular site for amusement is The Brasse (fantastic cartoonist)

And you're already at the best site of the lot for info, guides & active forums.

I'll post this here so I don't have to start a new thread. I got into the whole MMO thing a little late, and have only been playing WoW for about a year. I always here good things about Everquest, and am looking to try it out. But I think someone said Everquest was better to play than Everquest II. Is this true? If I wanted to try one out, which one should I try? Thanks for any help.

Well it really depends on what you are looking for in a game. EQ1 is the hardcore MMO player's MMO. The Yin to WoW's Yang. Whereas WoW is a very casual, easy to get into "accessible" MMO, EQ1 is just the opposite. 72 person raids, weeks to months long camps for mobs, min/max stat sets, butt-numbing, number-crunching fun. EQ2, on the other hand, falls somewhere in between the two. It's certainly more difficult and takes some more dedication than WoW, but it isn't nearly as demanding on your time or sense as EQ1 is. They're both great games. It's a matter of how much time you are willing to sink into one to be successful and how much of your life you want to commit to the tender bosom of SOE. ;)

Maybe I'll try EQII first then. ;) Thanks for the answer.

That's really one of the most concise pocket comparisions I've seen :)
