Downloading questionFollow

I bought the online version of the game, and I was wondering if you cancel the download before it is done... will all your previously downloaded data save? If not, any tips to get it downloaded faster? I'm willing to wait for however long necessary, but I of course want to start the game asap.

Also, just out of curiosity... why will the time remaining thing jump from like 4 minutes to 30hrs? Is it switching to a different patch to download or something?

Thanks for the help

You can stop the download and restart. It will start again at the last file that it didn't complete (when the patcher kicks off it does a scan of your folders and only downloads what isn't current, which would be from where you left off onward). As for the Estimated Time...it will jump a bit depending on your connection stability. It's also notoriously bad at estimating. If you have a broadband connection and the estimator starts reading higher than 10 hours or so, you are probably stuck on a file and should cancel/restart the patcher.

Good luck, it's worth it.

No one knows, it doesn't do it every time. But the patcher's download estimator is notorious for being, well, wrong. Hang in there, and glance over every now and then to see if it's hung up and maybe stop and restart.

Downloading the whole game, without disks, has been estimated at a 10 hour download, but I've heard that patching from disks can be around 4.

Thanks for the helpful answers.

My downloading starts at 23hrs right now... but I have to go through a special program to use the game at where I live now, so I'm guessing that is the reason why its taking so long.

Will the "download while playing" buttons in preferences allow me to play once the base of the game is downloaded, which I'm assuming it isn't yet. I hate to sound like I'm complaining but I've been downloading for well over 24hrs in total over the past couple days. I'm just anxious to play I guess!

P.S. I know that the game will run fine with this prgram once its downloaded

The base game, expansions, etc have to be downloaded first. Optional content can be downloaded in the background. If you're having to use a special program to download, I'm sure that's part of why it's taking so long. Remember, how fast a download is has to do with the path between you and SOE, not just your connections.

Just curious, what program and why do you have to use it? Firewall?

I use a program called pingfu because anything and everything is blocked on my proxy for me (military). It has worked well with stuff... aka I tried FF but it was too much of a time sink 'cause soloing became so painful so early, but it does slow things down
