Anyone have difficulties getting in the game recently?

Didn't play much last week, nor this week for that matter, but the oddest thing happened on Sunday. I started the game, it patched a few files and then my computer keeps insisting that the game crashes and shuts it down.

It offers the option of trying to find a solution online, but that never does anything, hardly surprising.

(details of the problem only say that it's a APPCRASH of the exe file, no idea what that is)

MIne is working fine a tthe moment. Fully patched vista ultimate, UAC disabled, full rigths to the program files/sony directory and all sub directories.

The last Microsoft patches did ***** with sound card drivers again. You might want to start by updating your sound card if you have nto already done so.

I don't have a soundcard, not that I know of anyway Smiley: grin

So it's not a Vista related problem then, definitely not an account issue either as I can play EQ I without a problem.

The latest change is the EQII patch, not any microsoft patch, so I would think that the patching did something wrong.

Ofcourse, now the problem would be to either try to fix it through Sony (heh, I'm laughing as I think of this, tried that before years ago with EQI, gave up after a week or two) or just reinstall the game.

Granted, haven't had anything but good service whilst playing EQII, so it might be worth it.

You have a Vista machine and no sound? That sounds odd do me. Somewhere you've got sound, and it uses drivers :)

Something to do with Realtek, I'll check it out after work. Not sure if those drivers would influence the starting up of the game though, but it's worth a shot!

Ok, so drivers are all updated and sony appears to refuse to make a new exe file as they tend to do every other day up till now. Anyone know where I might be able to download the recent patch or the EQII.exe file from Sony itself?

Either that or wait till monday to reinstall the game entirely.

edited to add: found it and not working. So I'm just going to try and contact support, see what they say.

Yep, changed it in the file properties that it will always run as administrator.

If I don't, I can't even get past the launchpad as it will get stuck on the update button.

I just hope to hear from Sony on Monday, I'll just focus on guitar hero tomorrow Smiley: grin

Try going into the properties of the shortcut, there should be a compatibility tab that lets you choose run as XP. Might or might not help, don't remember the exact thing I did to get it to work.

Thanks for the tip, tried it but same result.

I've already got a response from the support team, I hope it can be remedied soon. Got to hate Vista though, they asked for some "command" things, mostly to see the connections my computer makes with them, but I don't have "access".

Realtek went open source last year. So, there are about 18 different Vista drivers out there for the Realtek sound cards which are typically the sound built in to the motherboards. I tried about 4 different drivers before I got my sound to work in Vista at all. And, I had to go in and manually tell Vista not to upgrade them automatically cause it would wipe my sound out completely.. again.

However, since your problem is with the exe I doubt it has anything to do with the drivers. My suggestion.. and I suspect this will also be SOE's.. uninstall the game completely, delete the Sony and EQ2 folders, reboot run a defrag on the system and then reinstall from scratch. I know.. that sounds painful. But, at worst, it will let you know if your problem is software, hardware or OS. :)

Thanks for the suggestion, I've done a partial reinstall of the game, only deleting the original game and not the expansions. Didn't help, but since none of the options given by the SOE support service works, I'll try a complete uninstall and reinstall tomorrow. I've done everything they suggest, apart from going back to Direct X 9.0C.

If that doesn't work, I'll have to wait for a new patch, if that doesn't work, I'll have WoW reinstalled and switched games with pain in my heart.

I seem to recall that EQ2 doesn't support DirectX 10... could be mistaken on that though.

(or would it be DX10 doesn't support EQ2?)

So it is said now, after I've played EQII with Direct X 10 for about three weeks.

Reminds me of the time I played EQI with about no vid card whatsoever(some sort of onboard nonsense, way below game requirements), when I asked tech support how this was possible, he just said: "it happens".

One final attempt, but need some advice from the computer knowledged ones here. Can I replace my DirectX10 with DirectX9.0C on Vista? How would this affect my computer? (is it easily reversed?)

This would be the only thing that might make a difference, other than that I'm quite stumped. (me and Sony support for that matter, it's the only thing they still offer as solution)

Sorry for nagging on and on about this, but it really annoys me not being able to play the game for reasons quite unknown. (especially considering WoW seems to work quite fine, but even after only a couple of days, I already know I won't be playing it for very long, EQII working or not)

I sympathize with your frustrations. I've got no clue on DX10 and Vista though. You might check the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Thanks, I'll ask the question at the tech board, bound to be more people reading there specifically regarding this kind of questions.
